EM fields? I've never really understood them. Or how they work. Or how to RP with them.
(To be honest, Iâve never really gotten into the concept of using EM fields as emotional indicators. Some people like them, and there is a rational argument for them, if you want one. If I was to make up a basis for an EM field, Iâd say theyâre a side effect of the energy running between an individualâs emotional processors and his Spark, and it generally doesnât extend more than a foot or so from an individual botâs external plating. Consider--Cybertron is an energy-starved world. Energy fields are a sign of energy wasted.)
(I do occasionally use âSpark signaturesâ, though--a unique signal generated by a living Spark that can be detected at a distance...sometimes. When I use it Iâm generally saying that an older bot can be distinguished from a younger one based on âdensityâ--loosely speaking, density is a measure of how much information (emotional memories and experience) is packed into the Spark. A sane bot in a war universe makes darn sure heâs armored and EM insulated enough to muffle that signal--after all, his chances of survival drop badly if he can be tracked and IDâd based on a signal from his soul. Even worse if heâs vulnerable to EM blasts from enemies or accidents. In thin-armored or Spark-bared situations, of course, itâs a different story.)
Headcanon: Perceptorâs Electromagnetic Field (EMF or EM field) doesnât read like that of a normal bot. Ever since he altered his personality, itâs been missing many of the countless frequencies that make up an EM field.
Normally a field runs the full gamut of emotions, and includes the subtle differences between subsets of a more general emotion. (e.g. âBlissâ and âjoyâ would both fall under âhappiness,â and are distinctly different from each other.)
Perceptorâs field almost constantly reads as rather stark or unnaturally neutral. Itâs not as devoid of emotional frequencies as, say, that of an inanimate machine, but itâs pretty threadbare. If it expresses any emotions, itâll do something weird like only display one emotion without itâs intricacies, or display a few, but isolated and in quick succession when they should have been mixed. Itâs also a bit dimmer than the average EM field.
Heâs observed its effect on other bots, who sometimes act unsettled or unnerved as a result of coming into contact with it.
Perceptor has become accustomed to keeping his EM field very close to his person, and no longer deliberately uses it to communicate in any way.
Hey! I wanted to tell you that I loved your meta on stripes as concentric circles. But it was your idea that maybe everyone has a dormant shape shifting gene that really got me thinking. Because I've always loved the possible sciencey explanations to the supernatural that the show supports and one thing that bothered me was that it wasn't just the bite that could turn you. So whatever it is that does the trick it's not alpha saliva. There's claws but only if they go deep enough so it's not
(cont) anactual substance on said claws either. And that also nixes the viruspossibility. And then thereâs Matt who just upset the balance. So what IF whattriggers the turn is a very deep contact with a shapeshifterâs specific EMfield? EM fields can affect DNA and be involved in gene expression. Suddenlyâdrinking rain water out of a werewolfâs pawprint on a full moonnightâ sounds less like superstitious nonsense and more like apseudo-sciencey way to turn.Â
(cont) WackyEM fields could also kinda explain how psychological issues could possiblycause a gene to mutate e.g. Jacksonâs kanima stint and the whole âtheshape you take reflects the person that you areâ. And I guess possessiontoo. Oh and weâre back at stripes and concentric circles because guess how anEM field is graphically represented?
Thank you!Iâm glad you liked my meta. And I love you theory about EM fields: consideringthat 5a will most likely be focused specifically on the scientific aspects ofthe show, thereâs hope that weâll get some answers on how the âsupernaturalâactually works (maybe not an explicit explanation, because thatâs just notDavisâ MO).
This is sofar from my field of expertise that Iâm basically useless when it comes tothese topics (Wikipedia can only get you so far), but I think you may be on theright track here: saliva is definitely not what triggers the transformation(mutation?), and we know that itâs not something alphas can control (Liamturned even though that was not Scottâs intention, so intent is not the answerhere). So it must be something related to the biology of shapeshifters. Andmaybe one of the main differences between humans and shapeshifters lies in the strengthof the EM fields produced by their bodies.
The bodyproduces its own very complex electrical activity. Wherever there is electricalactivity, there is also a magnetic field. This is basic physics and applies toall life. The bodyâs own magnetic fields (MFs) are extremely tinyâso tiny thatthey are easily obscured by the surrounding planetary and environmental fields. These external fields have to be blocked to allow study of the bodyâs ownmagnetic fields. The natural internal electrical and magnetic fields of thebody regulate all the bodyâs processes and interact with one another. [x]Â
If the EMfield of a werewolf is stronger that normal, maybe it could affect humansâgenetics and trigger a very rapid mutation of the DNA.
Iâll stop here because Ifeel a little bit like iâm flying blind, and Iâll just leave with therepresentation of EM fields because, as you said, we have concentric circles onceagain:Â

Confession: I love reading TF fic where the robots have EM fields that broadcast emotions and things but I have such a hard time writing it
