Renowned for his interpretations of Otello and Lohengrin, Slezak has a somewhat heavier voice than Meyerbeer probably anticipated, but his sensitivity and taste are impressive. Both singers sound entirely convincing: unlike most of their more recent counterparts, they treat this duet as music to be brought alive and enjoyed rather than as a dusty museum piece with purely antiquarian interest.
