Dokoran: You are not Dalish? Nor of the city Alienages?Solas: Indeed. It maybe hard to believe elves existing out of such a binary, but it is true.Dokoran: What was it like?Solas: Quiet. Small. There was not much for a young man to do in such a place, and so I spent much of my time exploring the worlds in the Fade.Solas: I am, however, enjoying my time learning more of this world in order to continue my explorations.

Solas: I don’t believe the Inquisitor knows where we are going.Dokoran: Walking is enjoyable in these mountains; the way the sun reflects off of the lake – … [he sounds almost wistful]Solas: I find the company is what makes such things truly enjoyable. [a pause] And this is far more enjoyable than I had previously imagined.Dokoran: Oh – I, uh. I see.Solas: Of course.

Solas: You're from Tevinter.Fenris: [dryly] Aptly observed.Solas: And yet you escaped. Despite the lyrium marking your skin.Fenris: There is more than one way to end a life, you know.Solas: I am quite aware.

      the first time he addresses the inquisitor by name is a slip of the tongue--- an accident, the older elf insists, but dokoran is too amused to have his mood dampened. no matter. he is not a man of empty excuses. with a huff, fenris will shove aside the smaller elf whom bursts into innocent peals of laughter. ( how can you stay mad at a face like that? ) he would much rather admit his defeat: and fenris is known to be a proud elf. 

      the first time he apologizes is not by words, but by touch. it seems to be the only way that is enough between them, but this time, it isn’t carnal. it isn’t instinctual. in fact, every nerve in his body seems to scream at him to stop.( but when has he ever put himself first? ) when he visits dokoran that day, it throws the inquisitor off. it’s in the middle of day; it’s unexpected--- which is exactly why fenris doesn’t move in a way that dokoran recognizes, and the older elf only pauses in his advance when the inquisitor visibly flinches at his reach. the profuse apologies that spill from the other’s mouth is quietly ignored, and instead he moves with fluidity into a kneeling position until he can place a cool palm against clothed thighs that hide scars that only he is aware of. wordlessly, he expresses silent concern with a caress, and when all he hears is dokoran’s racing heartbeat--- he leaves with a parting smile, meant only for his eyes. 

      the first time fenris realizes that they are too different is too late. the ache in his chest is all too familiar. the pang in his heart--- he recognizes it with a sickening chill down his curved spine. it is not love, he will tell himself endlessly. he will not tear himself apart like this. not again; not ever.        ‘ was it that bad? ‘ dokoran will jest as per usual, but all fenris sees in that brief moment is HIM. oh, dear maker, please. anything but these nightmares. his face twists with pain that the inquisitor has never seen before, and it makes him worry. oh, why him? oh, why now? when fenris pushes past dokoran forcefully, with neither bite nor bark, dokoran knows--- he knows, in that instant, fenris will not turn back for him, for anything. he won’t look back anymore.

   ☾☾☾   admittedly, she jerks her hand away at first, clearly startled by the act. her nostrils flare and her eyes widen as she glances from the elf’s warm hand to his kind expression, before staring at her own hands with a mixture of confusion and fear. 

   ( why do they look so much alike? )

   even when she stands there battling with her own thoughts, dokoran is ever so patient, quietly waiting with his hand reaching out for her. in that moment, she sees no lingering reason to fear the inquisitor. if there’s anyone she can run to--- it’s him. and without a second thought, san lurches forward, this time clumsily wrapping both of her hands that tremble slightly around dokoran’s much bigger one. she grins from ear to ear.

   ☾☾☾   she sits in his lap, tugging curiously at tapered ears while making ‘ooh’s and ‘aah’s when they twitch. she wiggles them gently with her fingers, giggling childishly as she pats either side of dokoran’s head confidently.
