Still an an incredible game, beautiful presentation, immaculate vibes and really fun to play. And Gradriel is a great warrior princess protagonist who feels especially subversive for the time the game came out.
Of the characters that have their smaller side stories, not the biggest fan of Edward the knight but only because he's boring, Prosopina the witch is amazing both because she's a witch but also because she's a hilariously vindictive fail girl in her rivalry with Gradriel, and Portgus the pirate is still cool and hot as a fuck and I want to peg his ass. Then the true final boss, being a dragon who showed up in everyone's story and manipulated everyone into giving him these gems that Gradriel then has to defeat in the final battle is a great payoff.
But yes, Princess Crown VERY good and also a very cute and cozy sort of experience. It's Vanillaware's first ever game and I feel like they nailed it on their first try, and it's no wonder they wanted to reuse it's dna and created 2 spiritual sequels to build on it's ideas with Odin Sphere and Muramasa.

Hi there guys! there goes a comission done for BrossUno about Queen Elfaran from the forgotten but awesome game Princess Crown. If you have a Saturn or a PSP give it a try. It´s one of the best 2D experiences ever :) (if you are a fan of Vanillaware games, give a try too!)

This is a commissioned piece from an artist known as Jeinu from deviantArt. You may also know Jeinu from the weekly webcomic Miamaska (which I suggest you check out because I think it's neat).
I'm posting it here because I really felt like sharing along with some other things related to the character. So if you're curious about Queen Elfaran and where she came from, feel free to read on.
One thing you probably don't know about me, but I have a tendency to really get interested in minor characters from various fiction. For example, I really like Avatar Kyoshi from the animated Avatar series even though she only got about five minutes of screen time total. Or IG-88 (assassin droid) from Star Wars. Or Croco (minor villain) from Super Mario RPG.
Queen Elfaran here is in that same boat since she's from a Japanese action RPG that was only released on the Sega Saturn in 1997 called Princess Crown (made by the Vanillaware team responsible for Odin Sphere and Muramasa Demon Blade). That's pretty specific already, but Elfaran isn't even playable as she's the mother of the main character. She only shows up about twice throughout the game. However, I really like her design (along with Jeinu's interpretation) and the bits I can gleam of her character through old translations I've read. I'm not 100% her name is spelled "Elfaran" exactly, but I decided to go with it until someone corrected me.
If you look really hard on Google you can find -really small- official art of Elfaran (from the game and the official site), but none of her armor. So my first commission from Jeinu specifically was the picture above. Complicating things was the fact that the only reference of her armor is from the in-game sprite. Which looks something like this:
It's been awhile, so I forget the exact references I provided for the commission. But this should give you the gist of the project. So I'm really, really pleased just how much detail Jeinu was able to extrapolate from the game sprite like the mail and sleeves between her curiass and her gauntlets. Especially considering the stylistic flare of the art design Vanillaware is known for.
I've never played Princess Crown myself considering the hurdles of a game that was never released outside of Japan. Some have described it like a clunky Odin Sphere. But I appreciate the art of the game in any case.
I've had a few other artists draw Elfaran in the past (including another one from Jeinu that is more dramatic), and I will probably post those later provided the artists are okay with it. Rules vary from commission to commission and I have a hard time remembering it. But until then, I will definitely do this with other art in the future if only an excuse to talk about things I really like.
