eye contact: first and last moments of 4x04
primitive aftercare for a primitive sport
“All My Exes Live In Essex” makes (almost) everything a family affair. It’s too early to make many guesses about trajectory—the curse of the 24-episode season is how much time you have to fill, and how certain subplots will eventually be subsumed into some other narrative momentum. Still, “All My Exes Live In Essex” has a ton of potential...
“...And while the early episodes this season have done a great job positioning Joan as Sherlock’s protector; “All My Exes Live In Essex” goes a step further, and reminds Joan that in doing so, she’s put herself in a very gray area—one she is clearly still uncomfortable with. Or rather, she’s uncomfortable with how comfortable she’s been with it, which is more interesting still...”
out-of-the-loop old fogey here: what’s the deal with Sherlock’s use of the song “Friday” to annoy Watson? What’s that about?

tea cozy update: it was too dark and too blurred for a screen cap, but you can spot the familiar red & green knit cozy on the counter behind Sherlock when he brings the poultice mixture over to the table. Coincidence that Morland is neither seen nor heard in this episode?
bit o’ Joan backstory: first time we’ve heard the name of a hospital where Joan worked; Sherlock referred to it as “your former place of employ” which suggests he meant the last place she worked? Stuyvesant Memorial Hospital.
Joan’s odd non-response to Tamara referring to her as hospital “family” is, I guess, the best we can expect for evidence of how Joan feels about being back where her medical career crashed and burned.
West Coast! Elementary’s An A!
No spoilers. And it’s not perfect, but it is pretty damn awesome Watson-wise. Thank the Lord, after last week’s debacle it was much needed.
