For a Sherlock Holmes-inspired show set in a very exciting city, that's one of the most staid police procedural show I've ever watched. Kudos for Lucy Liu doing her best to be Watson. I didn't like the idea of gender and race bending her, and I still don't- the problem is not *her*, it's this Sherlock in this context. She would've been better as Sherlock instead of the hipster wannabe who's too old for that, really. I want to see him strangled with that scarf sometime.
First of all, of all the reasons for Sherlock and Joan to be flatmates/apartment sharing, SOBER COMPANION? REALLY?
Would it really hurt if there's a mutual acquaintance involved-- schoolmate, friend, acquaintance, I wouldn't even mind if they knew each other once upon a time-- instead of ..single woman to live with possible druggie?Where is Stamford when you need him?
There's Watson with a fascination with the macabre, then there's stupidity, and if Watson is a competent woman in NYT, or even a competentman, this would not happen. Fear of violence is a legitimate fear; it is, also, unfortunately, more expected of smart women to use to inform their decisions regarding who to live with.
Additionally, for all that book Holmes has always been eccentric and aloof and you get the feeling he's a bit hoity-toity (which BBC Sherlock emphasizes), it's still vitally important that Holmes and Watson start at approximate the same social stratum. Sherlock/Watson is not a Charles/Erik tale with element of Bosom Friend Crossing Great Social Divide. It's rather about crossing boundaries together....Instead, there's this Watson, who's apparently slumming it by living wiith Sherlock.
And this pair of Holmes/Watson, for all that talk about rich parents, in no way conveyed that they could be people who could know each other. Yes, it's interesting that Watson is English and Holmes is American, but I would think that some sort of...oh..Western-English-speaking commonalities to exist to make it believable that these two people are same in ways that counted.
I don't like BBC Sherlock's inhumanity and I don't like CBS Sherlock's inhumanity and...roughness. He's eccentric, but not in ways that's obvious in contrast to his Watson, who somehow..is also laden with the responsibility of keeping him "sober".
That's not a relationship of equals, that's not a relationship of people finding esoteric interests and aiding and abetting each other with occasional word of caution for each other's wellness' sakes. That's just...clunky narrative...ridiculous narrative and both Watson and Holmes' characterizations suffer for it because it does not confer mutual benefit and the problem's in the premise..
Watson can be "sober" as she likes and coming to discover the thrill of crime-solving, but she is still with a Holmes who cannot, in fact, take care of himself.
