It’s been too long since I posted a sound that doesn’t rely heavily on lyrics, and I may as well lean on the elite and legendary Aphex Twin to see me through this one. If you’ve never heard of AFX, first, shame on you. Secondly, it’s a solo music project that’s existed since the early 90’s entirely made up of one Richard David James, an Irish composer and deejay. Richard’s primary contribution to music on this planet has been that he pushed the envelope on what could perceivably be done with electronic music for decades and helped to create a brand-new genre of music called IDM (intelligent dance music), which in contrast to ‘stupid dance music’ is supposed to be a thoughtful, cerebral, and often more complex and experimental-in-structure alternative. When it comes to any genre of music, I think we can all agree its better to be deep than wide, and AFX has a catalog that was only initially ambient, then poised to switch gears several times to genres like acid-jungle, then shortly thereafter to some pretty dark and innovative drum’n’bass in the late 90’s. If you like frenzied breakbeats and crazy music videos, this is your act people! My personal history with this group began back in 2006 or so with an introduction by a lady friend to their earliest ambient tunes (Selected Ambient Works 85–92), which I’m pretty sure I fell in love with. A few years later I learned this artist had been making music since their mid-teens with no formal training, and a lot of AFX’s early catalog was made with old-ass computer software (not reliant on synthesizers) and cobbled together with disparate recordings from homemade equipment! That’s renaissance-level genius, folks! And this is minipops 67 [120.2] from 2014’s Syro. You can use it to concentrate, study, relax, and most importantly… DANCE! Smash play and enjoy music that was and is way ahead of its time dear listener!
