My mom's heard that the hospital she used to work at -- and many others in the area -- may stop doing elective surgeries. B/c they're getting so slammed due to Coronavirus.
This may include various surgeries that some trans folks get, since most of those are classified as “elective.”
EDIT: On the other hand, most surgeries leave you mildly immunocompromised while you recover, so the middle of a pandemic may not be a good time to get surgery anyway.
Should Health Insurance Cover Elective Cosmetic Surgery?
Yes, all health insurance should
Yes, but excluding Medicaid/Medicare
No, it should only cover medically necessary surgery
Elective surgeries will be back on from Thursday morning in SA! I'm excited but also don't want this to negatively impact on our hospitals. Back to patiently waiting until I hear from my surgeon I suppose.
So the Deputy CMO has spoken and the verdict is... they'll consider it. I think the national cabnet meets tomorrow, so I'm not sure if a descision will be made that soon, or if we're in for a few more weeks of waiting.

Recent news suggests that the state (SA) and federal governments are considering resuming elective surgeries as early as in a couple weeks time. I don’t know yet whether this encompasses all elective surgeries, or will just begin with Category 2 (top surgery is Category 3 (cosmetic surgery)) Either way, I’m considering this a step in a good direction, but I’m trying not to get my hopes up too much. Stay safe everyone, and phone a loved one.
Reschedule That Weekend Surgery: Here’s why!
According to the journal Medical Care, having elective surgery on a weekend – versus a weekday – boosts your risk of death by 318%! That’s because fewer medical professionals are available on weekends. And hospital staffs tend to be less experienced, with less access to diagnostic tools. And patients are more vulnerable to complications within the first 48 hours, so even Friday surgeries are risky. So, when’s it best to schedule elective surgery? The University of Toronto says the 2nd time slot each morning, Monday through Thursday. When the medical staff is well-rested, and has already worked out any kinks in the day.
