C-Section versus Vaginal Birth
When I gave birth to Arthur, I was in labour for 16 hours. They gave me medicine to progress my labour as I got stuck at 7cm. I got to 9cm and wouldn't get any further. During the whole time I had continuous monitoring as A kept getting distressed and his heart rate kept dropping. They did fetal blood gases whilst he was inside me (they scratched his head to take a sample of blood to measure his distress). Eventually, after 16hours they rushed me for a Catagory 2 C section.
So because of that, I have the choice to have an elective section or to try for a vaginal birth.
I have been so undecided. I guess I feel like I should have a VB. Before IVF I was certain I would try for a VB. I've spoken to my consultant and because of the risks, if I did try for a vaginal birth I would have to be monitored continuously (which means laying on my back and a canula in my hand incase they need to put me to sleep to get baby out). My husband also worked on maternity for a year and his opinion is to opt for an elective section. I guess he views it from an entirely medical perspective and he knows what can potentially go wrong. I want to be awake to meet this baby. I want to remember my first moments with her. I didn't get that with Arthur.
I don't have to decide yet but I'm seeing my consultant again this afternoon and I think I've decided that I'm going to opt for a section, but, if I do go into labour before my booked date, I would try for a vaginal birth.
