electricity.
During the long summer month of July, when the heat of the sun brings out the energy of the earth in the strongest, most obvious way, I sit under the wide sky. Other people run for cover when the booming and crashing is heard above. The excitement of the lights can be too much for some and they often fear the water that falls from the darkness. But not me. I love it. Even more than that, I need it.
At my beach on the northern shore of Lake Erie, my friends and relations and I often go for walks. We walk in the morning, to see the restless water reacting to the freshly awakened life and kissing the nocturnal creatures goodbye. We walk in the daytime, to see the water consuming the heated blue of the sky and the half-naked bodies of the swimmers. Most of all, we walk during the sunset, to see the water imitating the clouds, which the sun has drawn using only the colors of ballerinas.
I can remember one night in particular, this past summer, when the sky was especially lovely at sunset. The clouds filled the entire opening, from one edge of the earth to the other. On this seemingly normal summer’s night, the sky began to lower after the sun had gone to bed and I waited patiently as the darkness neared. Then suddenly the first light appeared, distant and undefined, accompanied by a much later rumble. The booming grew and, with each new pulse, more dancing lights filled the sky.
I don’t believe that I can even properly explain the thousands of movements and personalities that the lightening took on that night. Some jagged lines reached downward to the New York and Ohio state borders. Other shot sideways across the sky, hoping to kiss their soul mates. The most amazing instants however, were when all of these motions, and more, happened at once. A flash on the right. A spark to the left. A glint or glimmer or gleam above and below and everywhere. Eventually the storm grew nearer, exhausted from crossing the lake, but still it brought the rain.
I only need one great storm; just one storm every summer that will linger in my veins throughout the winter chill. By May or June of each year, my heartbeat has started to drag. My blood moves slower and slower until parts of me become numb. But then I watch a storm and the feeling rushes back into my fingertips and ears and nose. The electricity of my emotions returns and my brain cells are once again fused together.
I have never met anyone else who talks about thunderstorms as outwardly as I would if I enjoyed talking outwardly about such things, so I don’t know whether other people feel this way. I do, however, know that the earth needs the storms. The earth needs them, hundreds of them, to continue turning and living and being.
Summer thunderstorms, unlike other earthly commotions, do not cause pain. Hurricanes and tornadoes and earthquakes and tsunamis all bring destruction to anything or anyone in the way of their unconscious paths. Thunderstorms are not natural disasters, but rather common happenings of the world that often frighten people into hiding indoors and tree branches into falling to safer places. In the colder months, when the earth has tilted away from the sun to rest from its radiance, the clouds of a thunderstorm can be upset and vengeful, like angry cousins. But not in the summertime. In July, the only purpose of a storm is to shock the world back into breath with a touch of electricity and a sip of water.
