Thank you! I'd like to go back to most of my WIPs, but *Evernote (A note taking and organizational app) literally ate most of my chapter drafts, while at the same time, a LOT of bullshit was happening all at once in my general direction for a few years. And then when I got back on my feet, Chinese sword wizards had taken over my blog roll.

So I ended up with a whole new set of plot bunnies.

I would *like* to go back to (they flow from form to form) and also "Build a Life from Scratch," but it probably won't be for a long while. (Well, longer than it's already been.)

Ok so like. Are all of the gods super involved w their disciples and/or mortals as a whole, or do some of em a bit more removed? Are Terezi n John the only gods who were originally mortals?

oh boy oh boy. so! MOST of the time gods are a little more removed from humanity. you can think of like, greek mythology and the way gods sometimes come down and visit or dick around in disguise but mostly stay up and away. every disciple has met their patron at LEAST once, usually more than once. it all depends on how they train under them and their training process (which starts at thirteen). its different in different places around the world, but where dirks from, he had to learn how to summon heart and thus met with her multiple times during his training. but, once you get past the training phase, unless you get super serious about your magic, its unlikely that youre gonna see much of your god after that, and its not all that often mortals get to see gods other than their patrons (like how dirk had never met another god besides heart before all of this started).

some of the gods are more involved with their disciples than others. like mentioned in the fic, karkat is one of the most responsive. he likes helping people out as much as he can and 9/10 times hell answer. however, rose and dave tend to be more distant and its sort of a tossup if theyll ever respond at all. they really only responded to dirk because karkat and john (two of the people they care about the most) were directly involved and had taken an interest in the situation already.

(some of the gods also have less disciples than others. its not like the difference is so stark that when a mage of light shows up or whatever everyones like omg the chosen one but its WAY more common to find like mages of rage than mages of time or void. this is in part because some aspects (like time) are a little more dangerous (many time mages can get really hurt or cause a lot of problems by screwing around with timelines), and in part because some gods (like void) just dont really like dealing with disciples as much and are generally more distant. however, its more of the kind of vibe of when you meet someone and theyre like “oh yeah im a zookeeper actually” and youre like oh thats pretty fuckin cool because you probably dont know any zookeepers and it seems like a pretty neat gig to get in on but you know there are plenty of them out there being people and shti and youre not sure if you just havent met any zookeepers before or if maybe that person you talked to at the store was a zookeeper and you just didnt know about it ykwim? more often its like, actually legit powerful time or doom mages or whatever are hella rare because if all of them could go around altering lifelines thatd b p not good.)

i remember they pointed out that eridans design looks a lot like biblically accurate angels, which is directly what it was inspired by! so theres that. the rest im pulling from my notes

eridan is, obviously, the god of hope, so that means they have authority over creativity, imagination, and to some degree belief (though that also bleeds somewhat into kurlozs realm)- and also, obviously, hope itself. eridan is a physical manifestation of the hope and potential future that came with the very first life, making them a primordial being, but the very first god born on planet.

eridan is a prince of hope, so they use hope primarily to destroy rather than create. we usually think of hope as a pure idea that inspires good things, and many mages use it this way, but eridan is different in that they use it as a means to control and shape by removing what already exists. which isnt a bad thing! its just a different way of using magic. eridan has created and left room for the creation of many fantastic things, but the way they did it was always something that really bothered jake, as a mage of hope, and made it difficult for him to master his aspect because he always felt as though he wasnt doing it right, and that maybe there wasnt a right way that he was capable of. however, because eridan and dirk share a class, eridan served as a source of inspiration for dirk growing up, and many of jakes stories about eridan helped inspire dirk to take a more destructive turn in the use of his magic and make it work for him.

eridan struggles with gender identity and fluctuates frequently from one form of gender expression to another. however, they enjoy gender expression and when they find something theyre comfortable with, they get a lot of euphoria out of it. as humans have explored gender more throughout the years theyve found a couple different labels that worked for them, but its something they are always reworking and learning more about. currently, they identify as genderfluid. pronouns are always up in the air and changing, so im currently using they/them for the sake of simplicity.

ive got a metric shitton of notes on them and theyre not really... able to be separated, but hopefully i can copy these down in a coherent way

time and light are the twin gods of fate. they were born from the mother of the deeps, long before any kind of sophisticated life, way back when the universe was messy and dark and mostly void. times birth and his powers started the clock ticking forward, and he was immediately landed with the responsibility of maintaining the timeline and guiding it on course, so that more things could come, and the universe could develop. because of the extreme burden and responsibility of his powers, time is pretty much constantly split across timelines, to the point where his soul will literally never be the same and can never join again completely. light was landed with the responsibility to guide the entire timeline, and has future sight, enabling her to see what will be. without her, time couldnt possibly guide the timeline on the right track, and he needs her in order to do his job. but, her powers are overwhelming and often dissociate her from the present. because their powers come with a similar burden, and cannot work independently of each other, they almost always work as a unit.

at the beginning, time and light were distrustful of pretty much everything and everyone, as a result of literally being born from a horrible eldritch monster and having THAT for a mother, as well as being born with so much responsibility immediately dropped on them. with powers revolving around fate, they felt trapped by their own destinies and were resigned to just playing out an assigned role forever.

karkat, however, managed to chip away at them and befriend them, and callie shortly after, and from there they started to warm up to life and people and all of that. 

dave and rose are pretty much inseparable, and for a while literally were the same fucking person. they have a lot of similarities and are connected in a way unlike any of the other godly pairs (ie; doom/life, space/void). they play up the twin schtick pretty fucking hard, and its both a relic of once sharing an existence and a literal example of how in sync they are, and also just jokesies. for all intents and purposes, they are siblings and best friends, and will always trust and care about each other above everyone else.

in mythology, theyre generally viewed as a unit. you dont usually see one of them separate from the other. they rarely appear on earth and when they do, bad things usually follow. this is how crows and black cats have come to be viewed as bad omens in some cultures. they're extremely powerful and dangerous gods, and mages with their true abilities rarely surface. when they do, they usually come in pairs.

rose is a little more removed from humans, but has her favorites or champions every now and again. the biggest exception to this was when she fell in love with kanaya- the very first of the undead. i still havent figured out all of kanayas shit, but dave, karkat, and mituna were all probably involved in hooking them up and making kanaya immortal so rose could spend eternity with her. it was also a sort of defining moment in that it was one of the few things that ever separated dave and rose a little more, as rose spent more time with kanaya on their marriage. kanaya acts as a sort of anchor for her, keeping her grounded in the present and to the mortal world in a way that even dave isnt completely able to manage, and for a time dave does feel some jealousy and alienation over it, despite wanting rose to be happy. however, he does end up becoming good friends with kanaya in the end. 

rose is tightest with kanaya, karkat, callie, and john. callie and karkat were her first friends, and she very quickly bonded with john when he became a god. shes also good friends with eridan and nepeta, actually.

daves always been very interested in human affairs and stays pretty up to date on them, even though he rarely actually interacts with them. this is in part because hes so close with karkat, who spends tons of time with the humans. while karkat and rose are very close friends, dave and karkat have gotten a little closer, in part because of their similar protective urges and emotionally constipated nonsense. they started off fighting a lot, but over time grew extremely close, in a way that only terezi ever managed to interrupt. because theyre both so fucking ancient, they existed before human ideas about love, and so havent really ever taken the time to explore how their relationship fits into that. but, dave is fiercely loyal to karkat, and at the end of the day, always comes back to him. hes completely in love with him in a way that hes never loved anyone else, in a way that goes beyond human restraints and ideas about love.

someone asked about mituna on the old blog and i copied down my response somewhere, so heres? a little on that

myths about mituna are frequently confused with myths about dave (think angel of death, and mituna being the god of death, but dave having the trademark giant black wings). since dave is the god of time, he is sort of heavily involved in age, decay, and death, which makes the distinction a little confusing at times. but dave is perpetual and unending, whereas mituna makes laws and order out of all of daves chaos and puts an end to things to avoid the sort of madness that would otherwise be created. mituna is usually a pretty overlooked god because its kind of viewed as a depressing aspect and doom mages tend to get a bad rep because of the association with death (even though life mages have overlap with that ability and are really just as dangerous for the same fucking reasons). also, similar to nepeta (and her fascination with relationships) and karkat (the god of relationships), terezi has a fascination with law and order that often confuses people and causes them to mistake her for being in control of it, when really, she doesnt get shit about it and its mitunas domain.

i answered a lot of questions about where the gods came from and how they met on the old blog, so im gonna try and compile some of that information here for ppl looking for ammfh lore

technically speaking, void and space existed before anything else, but space was the only actual god at the time. blood came around second, born from spaces wounds when they tore themself apart out of loneliness. after blood, space made the First Creations, which existed before the time of life, and so were eldritch and confusing and not really. alive the way we think about it. one of these creations was the First Mother, or the Mother of the Deeps, who gave birth to time and light.

time and lights creation is when the universe really starts to move forward in a way that we recognize. they acted as a guide and helped space and blood form the council of the gods, helping space create life and doom, and bringing void onto the council.

from there, hope was born of the first true life, rage from later, more advanced life, and mind from the earliest humans. breath and heart are the youngest, both humans from early civilization.

anyone or anything can become a god, but the existing gods must unanimously agree to give them that power, which becomes less and less likely to happen each time a new god is added to the council. more often, people are made immortal or gifted a small degree of powers (ie; kanaya, the original vampire, who was made immortal and wed to light). some of these immortals or spirits are worshipped as some kind of deity, but it differs from culture to culture, as john tells dirk in god of lightning

as for how johns core group became friends, it wouldve really all started with blood, time, and light. its worth noting at this point that time and light arent entirely separate entities. theyve changed over the eons, but in the beginning, they were so inseparable they were basically just one person. thats why theyre the twins. blood and time/light didnt get along in the beginning, largely because time/light was only interested in playing out their fated role and extremely distrustful of everyone around them, and because blood wasnt entirely comfortable with them coming in and shaking things up. however, they literally have infinity together to work things out, and in the end, its karkat who teaches them to look to the present and their current relationships for happiness, rather than getting sucked into what may come to pass. karkats their first friend! space is pretty close after that, because theyre super friendly and lonely and from the moment time/light showed up their new friend alert went off.

john came WAY later, as one of the last gods to ever join the council. he was a human in one of the first ever human civilizations and died young in a war after losing his father. the gods decided they needed a new perspective on human nature and how it was progressing, and john was overwhelmed with the new responsibilities and had a very hard time with it, and even more so because some of the other newer gods had a hard time with adding another god to their ranks. rose and dave were extremely sympathetic, as gods who were used to adding new people to the council and gods whod had an insane amount of responsibility thrust upon them from creation, and the bond they formed with john kept him from trying to shirk all responsibility and bolt. karkat and callie were the next friends he made, as some of the other oldest gods (and the ones who befriended LITERALLY everyone). terezi and john took a l ong time to bond, though. terezi was sort of the resident expert on humans before john, and they werent thrilled to be replaced. theyre always in each others circle, though, because terezis super tight with karkat and dave, and over time they develop this kind of weird supportive rivalry thing that baffles and frightens dirk a bit when he first meets terezi. also terezi threatens to eat him, so theres that.
