I walked into work this morning and my co-workers were discussing the color of a dress. I had no idea what was going on but my first thought was “Is this a color-blind thing?” Blue and black and White and Gold are drastically different color combinations. And so I was shown a picture of the dress in question and I saw, (drum roll) a blue and black dress.
To satisfy my curious nature I wanted to see the white and gold version. It was easy to find, there are many articles on the dress explaining in-depth why people are seeing the different color schemes. It’s everywhere.
It did not take long to realize that it is not the best lit photo that has ever been taken, which could have saved a lot of commotion. But, when you have two people next to each other, viewing the same picture on the same screen and identifying two completely different color schemes, there is something awesome and weird happening.
As someone who designs on computer screens almost every day there was really only one explanation for this phenomenon. It is the same reason that someone identifies the orange I chose as yellow on my computer screen. Or the reason when you watch a video from the other side of the room the colors are almost inverted.
The real secret behind the dress. The angle the picture is being seen on. When you tilt your phone screen or adjust the screen brightness the colors you see on your device change. Colors even vary from device to device, like from my laptop to my iPad.
Wired.com made a GIF image to go along with their explanation on the dress, but if you really want to see it magically change colors before your eyes, find an un-doctored picture and just tilt your screen. On the image shown above the left and right photos have been adjusted to simulate what you see if you tilted your viewing screen towards and away from you when viewing the center picture.
This has led some people to wonder what people really see when they post a picture. Facebook user Ashleigh Ostermann posted a photo of her shoes in response to the dress, asking what color her friends saw. Maybe they are really blue and black too.
