DID YOU KNOW: one of the nicknames of Captain EJ Smith (shown at right on sailing day, April 10, 1912) was “Storm King?” During a voyage to South Africa during the Boer War, as master of the RMS Majestic - then serving as a troopship - Smith was so dedicated to keeping his vessel on schedule, he ordered Majestic to proceed at full speed through the outer skirts of a tropical storm rather than delay the voyage by navigating around the storm. Frequent travelers aboard ships under Smith were regaled with the story during dinners he attended, and thus a popular name among the millionaires who traveled exclusively under him became “Storm-King Smith.” 

DID YOU KNOW: Captain Edward John Smith, the Titanic’s Captain, had a reputation for being the safest commander on the Atlantic? EJ Smith had been at sea for forty-five years when he commanded the Titanic’s maiden voyage. His ships had a record of punctually arriving in port - no matter the conditions of the voyage - and Smith himself was popular with a specific set of millionaires who would only cross the Atlantic on ships under his command, earning him the nickname “The Millionaire’s Captain.”
