A sketch of Effie Gray, first married to painter John Ruskin (a relationship that was scandalously annulled), then to Pre Raphaelite artist John Millais. A talented artist and musician in her own right, Effie was Millais's muse, model, and mother of 8 children. However, the scandal of her annulment and swift marriage to one of Ruskin's protégées kept her from being presented at court or really accepted by society. Still, she adored Millais, blaming all her health problems in her later years on her marriage with Ruskin, and she died in 1897 at age 69 of throat cancer. Algo que tienen los nombres es que a veces sà lo dicen todo. Para constatarlo, baste recordar que el 18 de marzo de 1990 dos ladrones disfrazados de policÃas robaron varios cuadros de Isabella Stewart Gardner en el Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum de Boston. El museo era, como corresponde, de Isabella Stewart Gardner.
Sin apartarnos de esta teorÃa de que los nombres hablan y teniendo en cuenta que steward en inglés es «mayordomo», está claro quién los robó. Mary Roberts Rinehart, la escritora de novela negra que popularizó la frase The butler did it («Lo hizo el mayordomo»), estarÃa de acuerdo. Pues bien, dirÃa que Isabella Stewart Gardner lo sabÃa y se adelantó a ella, como prueba el hecho de que ordenara que los marcos de los lienzos birlados siguieran colgando vacÃos en la pared de su colección, maniobra que obligó al mayordomo a quitarles el polvo hasta el fin de sus dÃas –de lo contrario, se le caerÃa el pelo.Â
En cuanto al pelo, John Ruskin jamás podrÃa haber reunido una colección de la Ãndole de la de Byron. Es más, según sus biógrafos, no fue capaz de consumar su unión con Effie Gray porque se quedó estupefacto al ver que las mujeres tenÃan vello púbico, acostumbrado como estaba a ver sus cueros en cuadros que retrataban a angelicales doncellas desprovistas de tan mullida protección. Hay quien opina que también le hizo ascos al olor corporal y al menstruo. A los seis años de estar con él, Gray obtuvo una anulación y se casó con John Everett Millais, con quien tuvo ocho hijos sin precisar los servicios de una picatrix.
