So, for the most part, I have set the rule for myself that I'm not allowed to repeat any questions until after June. But. It's aromantic spectrum awareness week. And I am militantly aro. I am, of course, quite passionate about Dean being aro as hell, but I am not going to restrict this to just that. You can talk about anyone you want... As long as you make it about aromanticism.

of equal importance (to me): Dean never has any real awareness that being aro is a thing and, even if he did, he would not label himself that way
hear me out. I'm not sure he'd ever even notice that he didn't have the same drive to seek out a romantic partner as other people
I mean, he's really only ever around, like, three people and none of them actively seek romantic relationships either. even the grandest of romances in his immediate circle feel just as much like longing for normalcy as desiring romantic connection
also Dean's model of romantic love is exclusively what he remembers of John and Mary from when he was very young and what Mary's death did to John (and what he did because of it). if his perception of romantic love is young, affectionate parents who likely did everything they could to conceal any difficulties in their marriage or life from their not-even-school-aged kid plus the beatified memory of a dead mother, surely he can be forgiven for assuming that if he ever "met the right girl" it would feel like that. but "that's" a complete fabrication that nothing could ever feel like?
and even if he was not aro, there's still the enmeshment to reckon with. hard for a relationship with someone who's only known you for a few months, or even a few years, to measure up against the intimacy of being deeply entangled with someone who has loved you from the moment you were born (John) or someone who grew up in your arms (Sam). and that's true even if there's only covert/emotional incest. if it's sexual? bro, there's no competing with brushing hair back from Sam's face and the movement being weighted by muscle memory of checking for fever and holding his hair back when he threw up and haircuts and going in for that first kiss and putting a little league cap on his head and soap bubble hairdos and ripping some out in a particularly bad fight
