I couldn’t help but feel nostalgic as I listened to Above & Beyond’s latest release, “Northern Soul” which featured vocalist Richard Bedford, known from his features on A&B classics like “A Thing Called Love” & “Sun & Moon”.

As per usual, this A&B song initially had me right in my feels. The lyrics, so beautifully written and story-like, depict a setting of being held back from your goals and ambitions. However, the tone changes to that uplifting feeling that A&B’s music embodies so well with lyrics like, “You can break my heart and crush my dreams, But you can never take my soul”.

This track is an “Ode to Detroit”, a city that has been extremely influencial with dance music. “We’ve had ties to Detroit since before we met. Along with the world's best chrome wheels the city gave us all such sweet soul music, Aretha Franklin, Gladys Knight, Smokey Robinson and The Miracles, Stevie Wonder and the rest of the legendary Tamla Motown alumni, The Parliaments, Patti Smith, The White Stripes and Eminem – the list is endless. And let’s not forget techno, without whom etc. So we’re all hugely indebted to Detroit.”-Above & Beyond’s Tony McGuinness.

This was their 3rd single released from their upcoming album Common Ground, set to release late January 2018. If you have never been to an Above & Beyond show, I highly recommend! The atmosphere is indescribable and leaves you feeling motivated to conquer the world. Their music has such an inspirational message behind it, which is why I certainly can not wait to see this single drop live when I see them in January.
