marsh, swamp, bog, and fen are often used interchangeably but they're actually different things! they're all characterized by soils inundated with water (either permanently or seasonally) but there are some important differences.
a marsh is dominated by nonwoody emergent macrophytes. they're one of the most productive ecosystems on the planet & great habitat. riverine water source. can have high peat accumulation depending on temperature regime.
a swamp is dominated by woody vegetation and typically only occur in warm places. trees here often have adventitious roots that stick out of the water so they can get oxygen. very low peat accumulation because warm temperatures mean organic matter decomposes quickly. typically (but not always) fed by rivers.
bogs & fens are very similar. both have high accumulation of peat and require cold conditions. they are dominated by moss and sedge with very little woody vegetation. the main difference is that fens are fed by groundwater while bogs are fed by rainwater.
