A walk on the Chesapeake Bay
These pictures were all taken along the Chesapeake bay in an off the beaten path nature area. Β Itβs a beautiful place. Β Occasionally you have to nearly run to the beach because the mosquitoes are so thick. Β Depending on the tide, you can walk pretty far out into the bay and you will often see horseshoe crabs or occasionally a skate (a type of ray). Β This beach is home to endangered tiger beetles and the cargo ships going through the bay often lose cargo or garbage, so you need to be careful where you step.
These baskets are everywhere up and down the beach.Β Theyβre seafood baskets that have been lost by ships in the bay.Β Theyβre likely for blue crabs and/or softshell crabs (which are recently molted blue crabs).Β Blue crabs are not considered endangered, but are dealing with increasing habitat loss and degradation.Β
The beach is dotted with holes and burrows that are the homes of Atlantic Ghost Crabs.Β Ghost crabs prefer beaches with less human traffic as people and vehicles compress the sand making it harder for them to burrow (and also theyβre more likely to get crushed).Β When they see people or potential predators coming, they flit away like a ghost.Β Β
Iβve seen all sorts of interesting things wash up on this beach (including a reclining chair, civil war era glass bottles, and refrigerators), but this is probably the coolest.Β Itβs a sea turtle skull.Β Probably a Loggerhead Sea Turtle as itβs the most common in the area, but Iβm no expert. There wasnβt much left of this turtle, so I donβt know how it died, but sea turtles populations are suffering.Β Plastic pollution has been particularly rough on turtles (also habitat loss and poaching).Β Straws have gotten quite a bit of press as dangerous to turtles, but the overwhelming majority of ocean plastic is actually fishing industry waste.Β Turtles are also prone to incidental capture in fishing nets.Β So if you want to save the turtles, donβt just pass on the straw with your meal, also pass on eating seafood.
