Excuse me while I rant a moment about news outlets making ecologically irresponsible statements. The bastard invasive species known as the hammerhead worm has arrived in my province, and one reporter covering the story said "good news, they're carnivorous and eat snails, slugs and other garden pests as well as other worms". My guy. I know they aren't exactly the cutest, but snails and slugs and earthworms fill essential roles in their ecosystems. Not only are creatures like earthworms essential for soil health and decomposition, but they're essential food sources for other animals. Same with snails and slugs, even if we see them as pests, they belong and feed other animals do most people appreciate like song birds etc.
Hammerhead worms are invasive with no natural predators, produced a neurotoxin that will prevent anything from trying to eat them (it's tetrodotoxin, the same thing as pufferfish BTW, thankfully they don't produced a high enough concentration to kill or seriously harm a human, but don't touch them with bare hands, and don't let your pets eat them. It will usually cause skin irritation and tingling and make pets sick).
How to kill hammerhead worms: DO NOT CRUSH OR CHOP UP. THE PIECES CAN BECOME MORE INDIVIDUAL WORMS. Instead, ideally using a tool that won't chop them up, put them in a sealable container with at least 30% vinegar and a ton of salt. Leave them for at least 48 hours because apparently it can take that long for them to die in a salty acidic bath. Dispose of the sealed container properly and report the hammerhead worm sighting to your local environment authorities for invasive species tracking.
