I have a lot of gripes with the live action atla, but what's really got me ready to bang my head into the wall is the handling of Iroh at the moment.

Remember when Jeong Jeong, Bumi, Paku and Piandao find the Gaang in the original series they reveal the existence of the White Lotus and that they've been ordered to mobilize by Iroh, a currant Grand Lotus?

Well apparently Iroh is now a new recruit to the White Lotus, but it gets worse.

Remember that incident that shook Iroh to his foundation and lead to him reevaluating everything before abandoning the warmongering ways of his father and grandfather? You know, the little insignificant detail of HIS SON'S DEATH IN THE SEIGE OF BA SING SE? The seige Iroh was responsible for, putting his own son's blood on his hands along with the other casualties? The incident that broke Iroh the Fire Nation General and lead to the rise of Iroh the Grand Lotus?

Apparently in the live action the fault for Lu Ten's death is put on Jeong Jeong, one of the other firebending masters of the White Lotus.

Even if we somehow manage to overlook the importance of Iroh being the one who brought about his own son's death to his growth, it still doesn't make sense. Lu Ten was in the army with Iroh, Jeong Jeong was a respected naval officer. While the navy might have offered support during the seige of Ba Sing Se, it doesnt exactly make sense to have someone like Jeong Jeong playing a mere support when his skills would be more useful against an enemy like the Water Tribes.

If you wanted drama from Jeong Jeong's backstory you could have had it quite easily. He trained Zhao, you know the arrogant SOB who KILLED THE MOON and lead to Yue's death as she sacrificed herself to take its place? The asshole admiral who was often placed as an antagonist to Zuko and Iroh as well as the Gaang? You could do some interesting stuff with guilt over the violence of his protégé and have some meaningful character exploration with him and Iroh over the guilt they feel directly or indirectly for their pasts as Fire Nation powerhouses. But no, let's go with Jeong Jeong is the reason Lu Ten is dead

i’m going to an ostara celebration today! this is the second time that i’ve embroidered ferns, and i’m happy with how it turned out. i started with a darker green and integrated a lighter color as i got closer to the ends of the fronds to create a gradient :)

I do have a piece of writing advice, actually.

See, the first time I grew parsnips, I fucked it up good. I hadn't seen parsnips sprouting before, right, and in my eagerness I was keeping a close eye on the row. And every time I saw some intruding grass coming up, I twitched it right out, and went back to anticipating the germination of my parsnips.

But it turns out parsnips take a bit longer than anything else I'd ever grown to distinguish themselves visually. It's just the two little split leaves, almost identical to a newly seeded bit of kentucky bluegrass when they first come up, and they take a good bit to establish themselves and spread out flat before the main stem with its first distinctive scallopy leaf gets going.

I didn't get any parsnips, not that year, because I'd weeded them all out as soon as they showed their faces, with my 'ugh no that's grass' twitchy horticulture finger.

The next year, having in retrospect come to suspect what had happened, I left the row alone and didn't weed anything until all the sprouts coming up had all had a bit to set in and show their colors, and I've grown lots of parsnips since. They're kind of a slow crop, not a huge return, but I like them and watching them grow and digging them up, and their papery little seeds in the second year, if you don't harvest one either on purpose or because you misjudged the frost, so it's worth it.

Anyway, whenever I see someone stuck and struggling with their writing who's gotten into that frustration loop of typing a few words, rejecting them, backspacing, and starting again, I find myself thinking, you gotta stop weeding your parsnips, man.

the thing is that childhood doesn't just end when you turn 18 or when you turn 21. it's going to end dozens of times over. your childhood pet will die. actors you loved in movies you watched as a kid will die. your grandparents will die, and then your parents will die. it's going to end dozens and dozens of times and all you can do is let it. all you can do is stand in the middle of the grocery store and stare at freezers full of microwave pizza because you've suddenly been seized by the memory of what it felt like to have a pizza party on the last day of school before summer break. which is another ending in and of itself
