These four children come up the hill with a dead cobra with its head cut off to show all of us. These boys insisted on posing like “rappers from the U.S.” Blood was still coming out where the head was severed, and they told us that they were going to eat it later for dinner. Some of the students had the opportunity to touch and hold it.

Home stays May 15-17
Students chose partners prior to the trip for home stays. Each of us spent two nights with our host families and helped out around the house. Many of us helped around the household by cleaning dishes, cleaning clothing, sweeping, cooking, and taking care of the children. Some of the students had the opportunity to work in their plantation.
The language barrier, the difference in social norms, and cultural differences were difficult for a lot of us. Nonetheless, we made it a point to be as cooperative and as positive as possible. Although we were guests, we made an effort to integrate ourself into village life.

Massenguelani is a village in central Gabon with around 100-200 people. The most prominent language spoken there is French, however other dialects are spoken there as well. It is one of the only villages in that area that is increasing population by people immigrating into the village. Massenguelani is well known for spiritual healing and the Chief, after healing the president of Gabon, received solar power panels.
Stamps school students in collaboration with the Refresh Project worked ten days in the village working on several projects. We built two cookstoves from a group-designed brick-press, an electric fence demonstration from bamboo and a car battery, bee boxes (man-made hives) from found wood, and hand-washing stations from local resources. We also explained that car batteries could be charged using their solar panels and suggested that there could be potential for an inter-village business distributing such batteries. Some of the students also taught some English to the children in the village.
