Weird Isabeau/Siffrin/Loop shit where they just go all-in on the idea of Siffrin's body still belonging to Loop as the original version and do a scene or two where they're acting like Siffrin's is ONLY Loop's body and not a separate person- only speaking to Loop, Loop responding like they're the one being touched, and Loop conveying any instructions to Siffrin on how to behave via talking to their mind directly instead of ever addressing them out loud like a separate person. Is this anything? I feel like this is a thing.
this is in fact everything. this WOULD fix siffrin and loop both for a solid 3 business days. i know this to be real and true. we need to make this happen NOW.

Just thought you'd like to know I have now read both books and: damn. Even more obsessed with the slowburn psychological horror film that was Will's childhood now, one hundred percent agree with you that the author did not think about it in that level of detail but holy shit, I sure will be.
There are so many things the author didnât think about, orâI thinkâdeliberately left vague in the mistaken belief that it would enhance the story, and it does NOT.
My latest complaint is: how old were the characters in ancient magical history; corollaries: how long were their lifespans and how long did the War of Light and Dark last? Because the mythological vibe is definitely ânon-human magical quasi-immortals with a millennium of golden peace shattered into fighting epic battles for centuriesâ, a la Tolkienâs First Age, BUT by the (total lack of specificity in the) text, itâs also possible that they had an apocalyptic war for like 5, maybe 10 years, and then all key players died in like their late 30s, except I guess the Lady who lived long enough to have at least 1 kid? @ CSPacat are you trying to avoid the trap of giving your readers numbers and then they complain about the math, because lemme tell you, youâre DOING IT WRONG. The ratio of past-life-lived to 19th-century-life-lived (which we do know is ~17 years) MATTERS in a story about not being your terrible past self despite the weight of memory and instinct and fate! How much memory are we talking!
A while back you were posting songs for Practical Guide characters, and I'd like to nominate Brother's Keeper by Aimee Mann as a Wandering Bard song. (Is this the Bard singing ABOUT some unfortunate person she's made her latest main character or someone else talking about HER? Yes. It's complicated. There is a Vibe. I will not justify my terrible taste in music and women.)
'a while back' is a little bit of an understatment, in that I remember coming up with that post while waiting for the bus before the pandemic :P. But anyway yeah no I absolutely get it vibes-wise
-What do you mean, you clearly have excellent taste in women.
-TY for the new artist to go through the discography of, this will provide a nice change of pace from getting really into the Crane Wives 5 years late.
-Entirely separatally from the WB, I just really kind of love this line?
And after the fail, you can wail as they drag the river
Silence the band, wring the hand that you didn't give her
Anyway I now have the vision of a, like, Hadestown/O Brother Where Art Though Magical-Realism-Great-Depression version of Guide where the WB is a carnival barker or circus ringmaster, and I really, really like it.
For prompts, I'd really like to see your take on Wei Wuxian being summoned back by Qin Su instead of Mo Xuanyu. It's an idea I've only seen done once very briefly, and I've wanted to see more of it since.
Untamed verse
Being summoned back to replace a woman was, while odd, not the biggest problem in Wei Wuxianâs life.
The womenâs clothing he could deal with, thanks to some very specific dares in his youth due to hanging out with Nie Huaisang, that deviant; the make-up was something he had helped Jiang Yanli out with before; and the hair...
Whatever. His maids would live with his hair done up a little more casually than they might have expected.
No, the biggest problem was that he was masquerading as the wife of Lianfeng-zun, Chief Cultivator. And that actually wouldnât be so much of a problem, except that said Chief Cultivator was apparently an absolute psychopath with a collection of grisly trophies that said wife had apparently found right before deciding to end her life in favor of revenge.
Revenge which Wei Wuxian was massively underqualified to undertake.
Demonic cultivation or not, heâd probably need an army to undertake it, she wanted him to kill the Chief Cultivator, but if he didnât do it, his soul would be forfeit.
Great.
âI need help,â he decided.
Qin Su, as his summoner was apparently called, was very fond of veils, which Wei Wuxian now greatly appreciated as a fine trait in a woman, and had a low voice, which he also appreciated; no one questioned it when he asked for ink and paper for correspondence. Something he was allowed, apparently, unlike the ability to leave â that had been the first thing heâd tried, of course.Â
Unfortunately, Qin Su had apparently lost a son (her husband had killed her son, to be clear, thereâd been evidence aplenty in the treasure room Wei Wuxian had woken up in, and honestly the âsummon an evil spirit for vengeanceâ thing would be totally understandable if she hadnât chosen to summon him) and sheâd taken it sufficient badly in public, or was said to have, that her husband had decided to restrict her to the inside of Koi Tower out of fear for her safety, and to enforce the restriction with guards.
Fucking psychopath.Â
Wei Wuxian sat in front of the paper and stared at it.
The simple fact of the matter was, he had been dead for sixteen years.
Wen Ning, whoâd been his right hand, had died before he had, and resentful energy, while still available (and how, that treasure room was reeking with it), was no substitute for a person. The cultivation world had turned against him, leaving him without friends or allies to call on...was there someone who he might try to write to? Someone who would still answer his request if absolutely need be? And if so, who was it?Â
The Jin sect belonged to Lianfeng-zun, who he was trying to escape, and he had no idea if Jin Ling had survived the manâs apparently bloody reign since there was neither hide nor hair of a fifteen year old anywhere he could see. The Nie sect had once been reliable, always determined to destroy evil and enact justice, but Nie Mingjue was dead (a fact Wei Wuxian became aware of once he found that his head was in the treasure room sans body) and who knew the state of the sect now - especially since if he remembered correctly, Nie Huaisang had been fairly close to Meng Yao before he became Jin Guangyao, and might be close to him still. No, asking him was too much of a risk. Â
The Lan sect⌠Â
Lan Wangji would believe him, he thought. Lan Wangji had believed in him back then, and tried to help him, even at the end of it all. But it was Lan Xichen who was the sect leader, not Lan Wangji, and Lianfeng-zun was Lan Xichenâs sworn brother. Who could tell which of the two Jades of Lan would receive his letter?
No.
There was only one option.
Wei Wuxian took a deep breath beneath his veil, closed his eyes for a moment to gather strength, and wrote â
Jiang Cheng, I need your help.
-
âWhy are we rushing?â Jin Ling complained, though he looked more bemused than anything else. âJiujiu, you donât even like to go to Koi Tower, you never go to Koi Tower ââ
âI go twice a year and you know it,â Jiang Cheng snapped, his fingers still tightly clutching the letter that had been delivered by urgent post.
âYes, twice a year, the absolute bare minimum you have to visit,â Jin Ling said. He wasnât wrong, either. âWhoâs the letter from?â
âI already told you, itâs from Madame Jin.â
âI didnât realize you were serious,â Jin Ling said. âIâve never known you to be close to her. Just â tell me this isnât like the Mo Xuanyu thing, okay? Sheâs pretty, sure, but sheâs not that prettyâŚâ
âMo Xuanyu?â Jiang Cheng asked, only half paying attention. They were almost there. Soon, heâd know the truth, heâd know if â but how could it be anything but the truth? Who else would know to use those old codes, the ones they came up with as children, giggling together in their rooms at the Lotus Pier? No one yet living could know them, only him â
Soon.
âYou know, my uncle, the weird one â turns out he was a pervert that became fixated on Madame Jin ââ
âWhat does that have to do with me...â Jiang Cheng trailed off and turned to glare. âDonât be absurd!â
Jin Ling didnât have the courtesy to look abashed. âI was just checking ââ
They walked in through the doors of the Fragrant Palace. Qin Su was seated in her normal place, delicate as a flower in a dress of pale rose and a dusty veil hung over her face with a diadem, matching earrings, everything a proper noble lady should be, and at first Jiang Cheng thought that he must have been mistaken, hallucinating, something â
And then she turns to look at him and above the veil he saw those eyes and he knew.
-
âIâll write to Lan Wangji once weâre back at the Lotus Pier,â Jiang Cheng said.
âGood idea,â the carpet they were currently smuggling out of Lanling said. âLan Zhan will definitely help! I just couldnât guarantee heâd come for Qin Su, you understandâŚâ
âItâs a good thing you didnât,â Jin Ling said, kicking his heels. Heâd had rather a nasty shock, finding out firstly that Wei Wuxian had been summoned back, secondly that it was his aunt that had done the summoning, thirdly that sheâd done it to stop his little uncle, who was apparently evil, and lastly that his beloved jiujiu was responding to Wei Wuxianâs return by helping him rather than killing him â but he was young and recovered easily from shock, and by now he was more caught up in the drama and adventure of it all. âHanguang-jun never comes to Lanling. Not once.â
âThatâs true,â Jiang Cheng said. âNot even for discussion conferences. It would have been noticed.â
âWhy? Does he know about Lianfeng-zun ââ
âNo, he would have said something, heâs stupidly righteous like that,â Jiang Cheng said. âIt was because of you, you idiot.â
ââŚoh.â
âWhy does no one ever tell me these things?â Jin Ling complained.
-
âWhy did you come help me, Jiang Cheng?â Wei Wuxian asked much later. âYou didnât ask any questions, you didnât doubt, you just â you hate me. For what I did at the Nightless City, to shijie, for abandoning youâŚI know you hate me. Why did you come?â
Oh my God, you made your fic title an emote. That's incredible, I love it.
LOL - THANKS, YOU HAVE NO IDEA HOW LONG I WAS SITTING ON THAT ONE
Itâs really rare for me to come up with a fic title as anything other than last (barring maybe the summary), but the first time I had any idea I wanted to write any fic for Shinsou, I Knew what the title had to be. :X was actually the title for a fic concept I had before Summer Break, which I then cannibalized due to being dissatisfied with it and reused for its sequel while keeping the title. Iâm genuinely very fond of it, so Iâm glad you like it, too, haha!

In the Start Again verse, do you think Akechi ever secretly tried to gather more data on what Noir actually was, back when he still thought she might be a Metaverse entity possessing Haru? I like the image of him coming up with bizarre theories from her doing totally normal things.
He interviewed their driverâs Shadow and found out about the apparent sudden personality change, which contributed to the âmysterious Metaverse entityâ theory, but I think he wasnât really sure where to go next with that line of inquiry â and he was keeping pretty busy otherwise! So no real data gathering, but he was wondering. (Until he decided she had to be the real Haru because otherwise she wouldnât care so much about Kunikazu.)
"Dickhead Diogenes" isn't that just. Diogenes? I feel like being a dickhead in a hilarious way is just Diogenes already.
Gotta admit, youâve got me there. While weâre on the topic, another great Diogenes story:When asked how he wished to be buried, he left instructions to be thrown outside the city wall so wild animals could feast on his body. When asked if he minded this, he said, "Not at all, as long as you provide me with a stick to chase the creatures away!" When asked how he could use the stick since he would lack awareness, he replied "If I lack awareness, then why should I care what happens to me when I am dead?"
(2/2) Is Will's fucked-up childhood situation meant to be a kind of loose parallel of Anharion's thing? In that both of them spent large amounts of time chained to an object of furniture by someone at least dubiously taking the role of someone meant to love them (motherly love in Eleanor's case, romantic love in Sarcean's), who they remain emotionally attached to despite mistreatment. Does that, like... come up at all? Is it supposed to be a fucked-up karmic thing for Sarcean('s reincarnation)?
Fascinating question! I hadnât thought of that at all. I like the idea of fucked up karma!
But no, it is not explored at all. I donât think itâs a deliberate parallel; I think the author just likes chaining people to things. Actually, I am 100% certain the author likes chaining people to things.
That said, Iâm pretty sure Will only got chained up as aâŚspecial event? Like, he was off gathering firewood when his mother was killed; by age 16-17, at least, she clearly let him out of her sight okay. I think the only chaining incident weâre sure of is when he was 7 years old (I mean who hasnât wanted to chain up a 7yo, to keep them contained) and she was busy giving birth to another destined to destroy or be destroyed by him. Emotional circumstances were extreme that day, for Eleanor Kempen.
Details on Willâs childhood are very sparse. Because the world of these books are poorly constructed. But Eleanor was a caring enough mother that Will was utterly shocked by her attempt to kill him on her deathbed, and shocked to learn at least the intensity with which she believed he was an inherently evil monster who deserved, no, needed to be killed. I know thatâs a low bar, but⌠I think he was chained up a lot less than Anharion was, at least. There was no bespoke chain for it, for sure.
