Eawyn
Eawyn is an Anglo-Saxon feminine name composed of ea (river) and wyn (joy).
Variants:
Eawynn [Marion Gibbs 1939 Early Charters of the Cathedral Church of St. Paul, London, page 69].
Eawyn [Colleen Dunn 2015 God’s Chosen, page 292].
Prototheme:
ea = river [George Grundy 1933 Saxon Oxfordshire, page 4].
Deuterotheme:
WĘŹÉ´ = Joy, pleasure, delight [Joseph Bosworth 1838 A Dictionary of the Anglo-Saxon Language, 1st edition, page 486].
Usage:
Eawyn was the name of a nun who received a grant of land from King Eadræd in 946 [Colleen Dunn 2015 God’s Chosen, page 292]: “cuidam religiosæ sanctæ conversationis monialis feminæ vocitato nomine Eawynne” [Marion Gibbs 1939 Early Charters of the Cathedral Church of St. Paul, London, page 6].
Comment:
The prototheme is doubtful because Ea- was sometimes written for Ead-, Ean-, or Heah-.
