CW/TW: eating disorder talk, bulimia & binge eating disorder mention below . . . . . This isn’t something I’d normally be so open about because of shame as it’s a private struggle I’ve dealt with for 25 years but don’t “look the part”. But that’s the thing, eating disorders don’t all look the same & if this can help future people, it’s worth doing & discussing. I was one of 1,000 with a long eating disorder history chosen to take part in a research study for people struggling with bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder (since they often coexist). I was sent an Apple Watch to use with the app Recovery Record. It’s an app that I’ve been using on & off for the last 6-7 years & love. I have to fill the tube with saliva & use the uBiome kit to mail both back (so much for never giving away my DNA lol) & then track my urges, feelings, & behaviors as it relates to bulimia/binge eating for 30 days. Since most will be tracked through the watch, when the data is analyzed it’ll also look at other factors to look for patterns & trends for future treatments. I’m honored to have been chosen to help because this is an issue that’s so important to me but that I don’t feel comfortable being open about because of the preconceived notions about what someone with an ED looks like. But the struggle & feelings are still there so I’m glad I can contribute to something positive even if it’s hard to talk about.
