Josua Del Socorro wearing a precolonial asog attire, photographed by Eric Diaz.
Asog were individuals assigned male at birth but assumed shamanistic feminine roles in their Visayan society and were closely associated with infertility - which seems, to me, in contrast to women born with wombs. Among other names they are also known as babaylan, balian, or katalonan in different Philippine languages.
Shamanism survived Spanish and American colonialism to a certain degree. While the gender variant aspect has faced a decline, the belief in the abilities of shamans or faith healers is still strong especially in the countryside. These people can be either man or woman.
I had quite an adventure yesterday, February 19th.
We went to Jipapad, Eastern Samar to notarize SALNs and PDS of the teaching and non-teaching staff of Jipapad School District, barangay officials, and other LGU employees.
We also made a quick courtesy call to Hon. Benjamin E. Ver, municipal mayor, who expressed his gratitude for our service.
We enjoyed a sumptuous lunch at the residence of SBM Nonong Montallana upon his daughter Atty. Kessey Montallana's invitation.
We were able to serve around 150 clients who were all thankful that they did not have to travel or spend for notarial services.
Before going home, we took a few photos for posterity.
The municipality of Jipapad is situated in a low-lying area in the northernmost part of Eastern Samar. When it rains heavily, the place gets easily flooded as the river surrounding it overflows. Kaya we were happy we were given a sunny day for our legal outreach! π
Here goes the 13th Odyssey Waves in Calicoan, Guiuan Eastern Samar. π
This is an annual event happening for 13 years. This is to promote the tourism of Guiuan Eastern Samar. Different surfers from different places around the world came to visit here.
They have food stalls here, stores for clothes, anklets, temporary tattoos, and other surfing essentials.
It was actually my first time to go to the 13th Odyssey Waves in Calicoan. It's mesmerizing to see a lot of surfers at the sea and a lot of people whose skin is tanned. As the sun touches my skin it made me feel relieved, as if it's my first time. The ambiance is different. It's completely fun and an adventure. If only I know how to surf I would be surfing all day long. Now that I saw and felt how its like, I promise myself that someday I will learn how to surf.
