Before I get into the review, I’d like to make a disclaimer; I have collaborated with @WestfieldEasilocks extensions. It is not a paid collab, I was gifted the hair extensions & service to have them put in, as well as their shampoo, leave in conditioner & hair oil/heat protectant. To the girls who have followed me for ages, you’d already know I don’t work with or post anything that I don’t already use myself or would like to use myself. I researched tape-in extensions for a whole week - literally, I was googling everything. I read endless amounts of blogposts, forums/reviews and watched so many YouTube videos before deciding to go ahead with the collaboration...
After researching everything I needed to know about tape-in extensions, I specifically started to research any horror stories of having hair loss afterwards or anything else that could go wrong with having them put in. I didn’t find anything really bad and the only stories of women which encountered a negative experience was either because 1) they kept them in way too long (past the recommended time which is 6-8 weeks usually) or 2) they tried to apply/remove the tape-ins themselves and lastly 3) they went to an unexperienced hair stylist who didn’t apply them on properly. Even in all of those stories, I didn’t see or come across anything horrific that seemed like a major red flag.
I take great pride in my hair so I wouldn’t do anything to it that I thought would damage it’s natural state. My only and major concern was will I lose a lot of hair? If you take precautions and have them placed in by a professional and have them removed by a professional there is no reason for your hair to fall out. They use a solvent to loosen the glue on the tape and then gently taken off. Supposedly we lose about 50-100 strands of hair a day - whilst the tapes are in, I imagine those hairs that are stuck to the extensions, will not be able to shed/fall out, so, once the extensions are removed; you’ll probably notice a bulk amount of hair fall out but it should just be the normal amount that you would have lost anyway. I would recommend getting a good feel of your hair before hand, take before pictures/videos so you can see what your REAL hair actually looks like cos you can easily panic and get confused when you’ve been used to having all this extra hair and then remove them and are like “woah, where has my hair gone!?” lmao!
I couldn’t really find any reviews from women with fuller/longer hair so I really wanted to know how it worked on my kind of hair. My hair is thick enough so I just wanted length but after speaking to Zoe (the girl who put my tapes in), she explained that I would need to have a full head for the amount of hair I have, for them to blend properly otherwise it will look choppy.
Ok, now that the boring stuff is out of the way, I’ll write up the most Frequently asked questions & answers below.
1. How much does it cost? - As I explained, mine were for free but they have prices on their website and prices vary person to person (depending on how much hair you have, how short/long it is and how many packs of hair you’ll need.) You can book in a free consultation with them and they will better assess your hair and quote you specifically.
2. How many packs of hair did you have put in? - I had 4 packs put in. Shade Darkest brown, 22 inches. I don’t have them placed all the way to the top/front of my hair. Which means I have more freedom/movement with it.
3. Can you tie up your hair? - Yes. I’d wait a few days to a week but you can definitely tie your hair up. The tape’s lay flat to your hair so you there is a lot of movement. Also, the tape matches the colour of the extensions so it makes it super discreet.
4. Is it difficult to wash them? - Once you get them put in, you can’t wash your hair for 48 hours. After that, they need to be washed with a sulphate-free shampoo. It is a little difficult to wash your hair, I won’t lie. You can wash the top part of your hair as normal and then you just need to take extra care and time in washing in between the tape-ins. Vertical motions only! No scrubbing/rubbing your hair in circular motions. You do not want the hair to tangle. After washing it, you need to blow dry your roots/tapes so they don’t get wet and slip off. (You will be given a DO’s and DON’Ts leaflet.)
5. Do they weigh a lot/are they comfortable? - If you’ve ever worn clip-in extensions, it feels exactly like that. Especially for the first week. After that, you actually just get used to them. They’re not heavy or uncomfortable.
6. What is the hair texture like after washing them? - They just feel like real hair. When you first get them done, the hair is super silky (it’s obviously been treated and coated with products). I prefer them after they’ve been washed because it matches my natural hair type and texture more. I’ve not been using heat on my hair for a couple months so this is a bonus. The hair goes slightly wavy.
7. What is the general maintenance of them like? - The two main things you MUST do is take extra care when washing/drying your hair and making sure to tie it in a low bun or a low braid at night. I brush my hair daily at least 2-3 times. I brush it thoroughly before bed, braid it in a low bun and wake up to really cute soft waves & then just apply the oils and I’m good to go. No heat needed.
