May is Better Hearing and Speech Month! Did you know children learn best through play? You can use blocks to elicit all sorts of communication! When beginning to learn language, children often have an easier time imitating non-words. For example, take turns with your child building a big tower. Once the tower is built, you can model “ta-da!” Use these blocks to also model early prepositions while you are making the tower such as “look! it’s going up, up up.” Or knock the tower “down, down, down!” Get silly and pretend to use the blocks as a microphone to imitate the sounds of all the fun animals you see on each box. Model words like “hat” or “head” and pretend you all are astronauts going to the moon! The options for learning language through play are endless.
