昏き界獄 “that stifling, deadly prison”

The words 界獄 (or 獄界) are most often associated when speaking of the Monkey King, otherwise known as Sun Wukong, and his many tales of adventure. While he is most famous thanks to his role in the Chinese novel Journey to the West, he exists as a figure outside of that in many different contexts.

I don’t think I have the time to really get into all of his little adventures, but I can link you to his Wikipedia page - which, while not exhaustive and serves more as a general summary - I think is a pretty neat glimpse into the mythology surrounding him!

Fun fact, the number 8 is also a huge part of Buddhism and the Sun Wukong mythos, by extension. Sun Wukong has 8 different names, in one of his adventures he is locked an 8-way trigram, he earns 8 different ways of immortality (and is considered an 8-fold immortal), and Tang Sanzan, the monk who frees Sun Wukong in Journey to the West, goes through 81 trials on his pilgrimage.

魔術師 Magician

As everyone knows, “Sevens Road Magician” is pronounced normally as “magician”, the English word. However, when the old man is talking to the hooded figure, he says majyutsushi, which is “magician” in Japanese. This is a note to possibly separate them for now.

The color of “Fusion”

So you may notice that some instances of the word “fusion” are colored green like spells, while others are not. This is not a mistake; I made the decision to mark the difference between when they were specifically talking about the card vs the mechanic.

When they’re talking about the card, it will be colored green. When they’re talking about the mechanic, it won’t be colored. Simple as that. This will be carried over to future instances of the word as well.
