trans headcanons always hold a special place in my heart but the other day i got genuinely emotional thinking about transfem neil josten and her developing a better relationship with her reflection the further into her transition she gets until eventually, despite her hair and eye color, she looks into a mirror and only sees herself, not her father - not even when she smiles
i was going to make a post abt how i find it charming that the fandom always calls mary "mary hatford" and never "mary wesninski" despite her last name never being confirmed in canon... EXCEPT!! in tkm in neil's narration, he DOES call her "mary hatford"
and it really struck me because given the setting (mob boss marriage) and the time period (would have happened in 80s before neil was born), in all likelihood mary would have changed her name from mary hatford to mary wesninski, but for neil to think of her as mary hatford means she either 1) didn't change her name which would be sooooo interesting of a decision bc of the factors above and absolutely would have colored her relationship with nathan in a negative way, or 2) she did change her name, but neil refuses to think of her that way or switched her name back once they ran away (a metaphorical casting off of nathan's ownership over them to go with their literal one of running away) or once she died (this one ties into the circumstances in which he calls her "mary hatford" because it's in reference to her connection to her brother and her position as a member of the hatford family and the responsibility for(/potentially ownership over) her stuart still feels and the fact that he would not have forgotten/forgiven that nathan killed her)
anyways, MARY HATFORD YOU WILL ALWAYS BE HAUNTING THE NARRATIVE
it's pretty much canon that neil doesn't really care about music except to dislike loud music (mentioned in trk or tkm) but i like to think of all the genres out there, he has a peculiar fondness for like old country/folk/swing stuff, like the kind that would play on the only radio station available when you're driving through the truly remote regions of the usa
when he and mary would be traveling and had no one immediately chasing them, especially at night and in the middle of nowhere, she'd turn on the radio and find whatever channel was quietest and it usually was something along those lines

craziest thing about aftg taking place in 2006-2007 is there was no lady gaga playing at the club. can you imagine nicky not knowing poker face??? or just dance or love game or bad romance???? inconceivable.

in neil's sophomore year the upperclassmen (including nicky) throw him a VERY low key birthday party. they don't even say it's for his birthday at first they just plan a movie night with him in the girl's dorm and, oh look there just so happens to be a cake there (the cake is a home made chiffon sponge cake - it has one of the lowest sugar:flour ratios of all the sponge cakes and they even put a little less sugar in than the recipe calls for. it's topped with very lightly sweetened whipped cream and sliced fruit). they don't sing happy birthday at all, and at the end of the night they just give him a card (not a birthday one, a blank one that has a fox on the outside that they've all written personalized notes to him in) with his present inside (two courtside tickets to the closest pro exy game on a weekend where they don't also have a game or practice). i think it makes neil cry.
