The rum hadn't done it's job tonight- or maybe it had. He stood there staring down at her casket feeling numbed, but whether the alcohol had any part in that was yet to be seen. There was a flask sitting heavy in the pocket of his black coat but his hands weighed too much at the moment. His whole body was too heavy. He just stared down at the casket, knowing in his mind that the woman he loved laid just below that beautiful mahogany wood.Â
Was it raining?
When the street lights come on, and the fireflies flicker I am walking her home- making plans. With her shoes in her hands I am watching her dance, as the hem of her dress gently kisses the grass.Â
They were young. Both of them, barely flirting with twenties on a warm summer night in the fields of North Carolina. There was no real reason to be there, but that was the right place to be. Fireflies lit up the fields but what caught his attention was the way her white dress was illuminated. Like a spotlight. She was beautiful.Â
And suddenly it rains on us- she is laughing and turns up her hands.Â
All he could remember was thinking it had to be impossible for her to look so beautiful. A familiar ache returns to his chest when she catches his eye mid-spin. That smile on her lips- the weightless way she twirls gives his breath a catch.Â
That was it. He loved her. And there was no going back for him. She might as well hold his heart in her hands, because it was hers for the taking.Â
Like autumn turns leaves, winter will breath cold on our necks ( snow in our paths ) Wherever she goes all that I know about us is that beautiful things never last- that's why fireflies flash.Â
Every so often someone would come up to her casket and say their goodbyes. Good friends came and went, some leaving white roses on a bed of reds in her memory. Some eyes were wet with tears while others red rimmed and angry.Â
He understood.Â
When this summer time ends we will not part as friends- things were promised in blood. We have sinned.. Now there's tears in her eyes as she's screaming goodbyes. I run 'long side the car turning numb to the sound.Â
If walls could speak the walls of that small apartment would scream one year for every second they'd wasted together. Blue eyes were dimming and dyed with hard liquored mistakes. Her laughter had faded to screaming, his love turning to patience.Â
"I hate you." "You don't mean that baby, come here. Don't say that to me." "Don't touch me! I hate you! I hate you, I hate you, Ihateyou!" "I said don't say that! I love you, come back here!"
'Maybe if we stick it out' bled out and finally, an echo of her final front-door-slam hit him where she'd never manage to leave a mark.Â
Suddenly, the world around him seemed to fade into a thousand shades of grey.
I notice a chill in the air; September's creepin' up fast.Â
"You're getting sick, baby.." "I'm fine. Don't try to drag me back there. I'm fine with my friends here." "You need a doctor, and you know it." "I'm fine! God damn, why do you always have to control everything? Get the fuck out of here, no one asked you to be here!"
Like autumn turns leaves, winter will breath cold on our necks ( snow in our paths ) Wherever she goes all that I know about us is that beautiful things never last- that's why fireflies flash.Â
A mumble to his left snaps him back to the present. "Beautiful picture, huh?" It wasn't a question, but yes. Placed to the left of the casket was a beautiful photo taken of her in the snow- her long brown hair and big blue eyes making the white wonderland look washed out and drab in comparison. Her arms were held high above her head as if to say - I'm here! I made it!Â
"Taken right after her acceptance letter, I remember," came another voice behind them. He didn't turn to look. They all had the same face in his opinion. After all, what did a thousand matches hold against the temperature of a star in the sky.Â
Why even look.Â
Innocence didn't mean we're immune to these things- let's blame the passage of time. Love and loss, truth- it cost more than I can spare right now. Maybe it's simpler to lie.Â
"What do you mean she's sick?" Dancing in the fields with only moonlight and fireflies to keep our sights. "What's wrong with her? Give her medicine- make her better!" Her skirt blowing lazy waves in the wind as we walk on the beach looking for just the right kind of sea shells for her attention. "You can't tell me there's no other avenues to explore- you can't let her die! You're a doctor for fuck's sake! Do something!" Passionate nights and sweet mornings- the way she demands to be kissed awake.
Like autumn turns leaves, winter will breath cold on our necks ( snow in our paths) Wherever she goes all that I know is that beautiful things never last- that's why fireflies flash.
"So.. what's next?" He didn't even bother to look at who asked. His eyes belonged with her, on her, keeping her safe. They never left that casket.Â
"Nothing," he replied. It was the only word he felt suiting .
