Eastbound from Avon/DX Tower
This is an eastbound train departing Avon Yard west of Indianapolis—one may notice an auto rack turned sideways in the background in the first image. One may also note an Alco unit behind the two EMD units in the lead. In the second image we see a westbound train as well.
In the last two photographs we see the same train at DX Tower northeast of Indianapolis. In the first of those two images we see where the P&E diverges (they had a small yard on the east side), and in the next the train is pounding over the tracks of the Indianapolis Union Railway right adjacent to the tower. The crew has been hooped up fresh train orders.
While these photographs are of the newly formed Conrail—it’s been just over a week since it became an operating entity—things appear as the Penn Central for all intents and purposes. Formerly, this line was the Big Four/New York Central Railroad.
