Johann Adam Reincken’s Hortus Musicus No. IV in D Minor. Bach took many of these themes in order to write his Sonata nach Reincken. Though Reincken was famous throughout his life, friends with the great Buxtehude no less, and died wealthy, very little of his music survives today. From this piece, however, we can see a marvellous example of the fantastical style made popular by him and other contemporaries. His music had a great influence on other Baroque composers, not least on Bach.
