Taylour Paige has landed one of the lead roles opposite Viola Davis in Netflix's August Wilson adaptation, Ma Rainey's Black Bottom. Dusan Brown has also been cast. They join Chadwick Boseman, Glynn Turman and Colman Domingo.
Paige will play Ma Rainey's lover, Dussie Mae, and Brown will play her nephew, Sylvester.
In the movie, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom an interesting aspect of Ma Rainey’s personality is her queerness which plays a role in the film. In the beginning of the film when Ma was setting up in recording studio with her nephew Sylvester and Dussie Mae, her implied lover. Dussie is shown vibing next to a microphone when Sylvester is practicing his piano and the camera slowly pans down while Dussie is dancing to her butt which Ma is shown to be admiring. Ma then compliments Dussie’s dress and caresses her while bringing her closer to her, “I want you to look nice for me…You gonna travel with the show you gonna look nice…Ma knows something about bad feet” (25:25-25:39) before singing her a song and slapping her butt. Dussie then flirtatiously put on her shoes while caressing her legs. Ma is shown doing this next to Sylvester which implies she isn’t concerned about expressing her sexuality in front of others, especially concerning the time period that was the 1920s.
The camera angle of showing Dussie Mae’s butt through the perspective of Ma is a subversion of the typical objectification of the female buttocks usually shown through the male perspective. In bell hooks’s Selling Hot Pussy: Representations of Black Female Sexuality in the Cultural Marketplace when talking about black female parts that are objectified, it was often done though the gaze of men that is rooted in white supremacy and slavery, such as for Sarah Bartmann, “They were told not to look at her as a human being. They were to notice only certain parts. Objected in a manner similar to that white slaves who stood on auction blocks while owners and overseers described their important, salable parts…They were reduced to mere spectacle” (pg.123) By making the gazing through a female perspective, it shows that Ma is challenging the norms of male dominance alongside her headstrong personality towards her male counterparts.
However, Dussie is also shown to be susceptible to flirtations with black men as well. When Ma scolds Dussie for shaking her behind while Ma is talking to the band leader, Dussie goes to Levee's place and she proceeds to be won over by Levee's advances before having sex with her. In bell hooks’s text, Selling Hot Pussy: Representations of Black Female Sexuality in the Cultural Marketplace, she wrote for black female bodies, “When calling attention to the body in a manner inviting the gaze to mutilate black female bodies once again, to focus solely on the ‘butt,’ contemporary celebrations of this part of the anatomy do not subvert sexist/racist expectations.” (pg.124) Despite the queer glazing of Dussie’s body the movie still presents her in a way that exemplify the jezebel, having an affair with a male band member behind her female lover’s back, displaying the notion in the movie that heterosexuality will eventually triumph over homosexuality given the circumstances.
