Evanescent
(She was the evanescent of his life– there and gone.)
Part 1
You were already on your way to Duskwood when a notification popped in your phone. Without wasting as much as a second, you unlocked the phone. It was Lilly.
Lilly
Dan and I went to the site. To find Jake.
You forgot how to breathe.
Lilly
He is fine.
You exhale. You didn't know how long you had been holding it in. But finally a sigh of relief left your lips. You tried so hard not to think of the last text he sent you but it was all you thought about. And now finally you could think about it, dream about him without feeling uneasy or sad.
Amelia
I am so thankful. So so deeply
Lilly
It's okay. You don't need to thank me.
Amelia
So that means he's with you right now?
How's he?
Is he hurt?
Lilly
Yes, despite his reluctance to come with us, Dan somehow convinced him to come. I don't know what Dan said to him but it worked and he's at my place right now. So is Hannah.
He has a little wound around his neck but it's not something to worry about.
Amelia
I understand. What's he doing now?
Lilly
He is resting. He's exhausted. I mean, really exhausted.
Amelia
Can I tell you something and hope you wouldn't tell Jake?
Lilly
A secret? Of course
Amelia
I’m on my way to Duskwood
Lilly
Oh
OH
OH SHIT
Amelia
Yeah, shit.
Lilly
You need to come STRAIGHT TO MY HOUSE
Wait
I'll share my location
Amelia
Yeah, that would help, thank you
Lilly shares the location of her house and you are surprised that you are only fifteen minutes away from her house. From Jake. And you intend to cover that distance as soon as possible. So you start walking faster. The streets start getting narrower with almost no light. Five minutes away. And you are practically running now.
Not a single thing could stop you. Unless someone bumps into you and throws you off balance. The man who bumped into you cursed and instantly whispered an apology. Something clicked. That voice. You recognise it.
And almost unintentionally you say, “Phil?”
His long hair, the tattoo and his sharp features. No doubt, it's him.
“That’s right. Sorry— I— do I know—”
“I am Amelia.”
His eyes widened. “Wait, for real?”
You cringe. “Yes. I mean, how many people do you bump into on a daily basis who tell you that they are Amelia?” Your sarcasm makes him laugh. You don't have time to waste, you remind yourself.
“Well, it's wonderful—”
“I’m so sorry. But I really need to get somewhere right now. I’ll try to see you soon.” You emphasise on the try and hope he gets your level of interest.
“Sure. You know my number and place, so, anytime.” he smiles. The type of smile that would seduce any girl in this town but too bad, you are not from here.
You nod and run away. After four minutes that seemed like eternity, you are finally standing in front of Lilly’s house. You waste no time ringing the bell. Again and again. And again. Until the door opens and the first person you see is Lilly.
She has a knowing smile on her face. It's a smile that could light up the whole room but you know better. You know the sadness in that smile. She's clearly in denial but well, so are you. You can't think of Richy. You assume she told everyone else than Jake. You can't wait to see his reaction. Damn, you can't wait to see his face. Hear his voice.
Lilly wraps her hands around you and you mimic her movements. “God, I can't believe it's really you.” The hug reminds you how long it has been since the last time you hugged someone. Lilly lets go of you and you step inside the house. Your eyes instantly search for one particular person. But he is not here.
Instead, Dan appears from the kitchen. “Hey, princess.” and you can't help but to laugh and hug him.
“Loverboy is in the room upstairs. And he doesn't know shit about you being here.” He says while stepping back.
“Loverboy? Wasn't it you Hackerboy?” you say. Lilly laughs beside you.
“Well, I remember the look on his face when we brought you up a couple of minutes ago. He is hacked, for real.” He says with confidence.
Well, you were hacked first. But instead you say, “Why are you coming from the kitchen? Wait— were you cooking?”
“Trying.” Lilly comments.
Dan glares at her. “Don’t make fun of my incompetence. At least I am trying.”
You laugh.
“Anyway—” you begin but Dan cuts you off.
“Yeah, yeah, you gotta make out with Loverboy, we get it, go ahead.” He shakes his hand. “But try to be less loud.”
“Oh shut up.” you say. You start making your way up the stairs, blushing hard on Dan’s comment. And in a few steps, you are in front of the room. Jake is inside that room. Your heart beats unevenly. This is it. You didn't prepare what you will say to him, didn't predict what words would leave his mouth. You are undone.
Still, you open the door.
The bed is empty. The couch is empty. The chair is empty.
Your eyes dart to the window. And there he is. Sitting by the window. Lost in his thoughts. You stand there admiring his face. His hair is black, the darkest shade at that. His body is lean, and he definitely is tall as hell. Even his side profile makes you swoon.
And slowly as you close the door, the door makes a sound which brings Jake out of his thoughts. Without completely turning away, he starts, “I am totally fine, Lilly. You can—”
But then his eyes land on you and he looks at you. His eyes are green and his face— his face is the most beautiful thing. And he is standing now, looking at you as if he doesn't believe what's happening right now.
Then, finally, he says, “Amelia.” His voice is smooth, soft and a little rough on the edges. “What are you doing here?”
“I came to see you. I was worried.” You say almost quickly.
His mouth opens and you realise he did not expect you to say that. You don't understand why.
“I came here to save you from trouble. And we had a promise, didn't we? You promised me you wouldn't come here.” His voice turns serious. And your smile is gone. You may have lied about not having any predictions about what he’ll say to you, because you had a million and this was not one of them.
“What do you mean? Jake,” You are lacking words but you know he is not making any sense right now. “Trouble is gone.” you simply say. “And you never send any message after our last conversation. How was I to know that you are fine? And our promise was for me to be safe. It didn’t ultimately mean you could sacrifice yourself for me.”
“Amelia, you don't understand. I didn't send you a message because I wasn't intending to.” He says and he sounds so so so far away. Out of your reach.
“What do you mean? What do you mean by that?” Your voice was rising with the speed of your heart. “What the hell, Jake? You tell me you love me with the intention of not talking to me ever again?”
His eyes become dark. You see his throat working. “Answer me. Answer me so that I can walk out of this room with some dignity.” You don't realise that you are moving closer to him. And soon you are close enough to the point that he has to look down to meet your gaze.
He looks away. “I told you that I love you because I intended to never see you again. Even if I had died in the mine or walked out completely fine, I had it decided.” then he meets your eyes again. “Because it is the best for both of us. And despite all arguments, you know it is.”
“No, I don't know shit, Jake. Because, honestly,” You take a step back, gesture to him, “I can't recognise you. You are not the Jake who talked about how our first meeting would be like. And now that it really is happening, you are pulling this shit?”
“We are never going to work.” His words pierce through your heart. “You know it somewhere but you can't accept it. It’ll hurt more in the future so—”
You cut him off because you couldn't listen to what he was saying. “So, let's just pretend to be strangers, right? Why did you even come here if you had it all planned out? What did Dan say so convincingly?”
He looks somewhere to your left. “I told him that I was ready to walk away from you and he told me that he would let me without telling you if I agreed to come here tonight. For Lilly. And he lied and I could punch the shit out of him right.”
“No, you are not going to punch the shit out of him. Because he is my friend. And a far more caring one than you.”
At that, he looks at you. The intensity of his eyes could swallow you whole. He takes a step closer. His feet brushing against yours. “Don’t say that.” His voice is low.
“Say what?”
His eyes don't move away from yours. “Don’t say that I don't care about you. I care, that's why I am walking away.”
This time, you move closer. You face inches away from him and he doesn't move back. He looks at you with the same sincerity and intensity. “You are walking away because you are a coward.”
His eyes snap to your lips and again to your eyes. So fast as if it didn't even happen. He stares at you and takes a step back. He turns around and walks away.
“You are a coward, Jake. Admit it. You don't love me enough. Not enough to stay, not enough to give us a chance.” He stops. “Everything you said was a lie. You are a liar. And I loved you, Jake. I dreamt of us.”
“Don’t say that.” He says without turning away. His right hand turned into fist.
“Why, truth hurts you? I thought—”
You must be hallucinating. Your mind might be playing games on you. Or you might have completely lost your mind.
Because he closes the distance between you two at an inhuman speed. His hand is around your waist and the other is on your cheek. And he kisses you. So softly. Lightly. As if you might break. It took you a moment but you responded back, wrapping your hand around his neck, pulling him closer to you.
He lets go to look at you. He whispers, “Why do you always make me do the things I only dream about?”
He wasn't expecting you to answer because he kisses you again, passionately this time, hungrily, as if some countdown had started. You can't control your hands when they wrap around his neck. His grip tightens around your waist as he pulls you even closer. Your body flashed against his. His hand moves at the back of your neck, turning your head in desirable angles. When he stops, he doesn't step away.
His forehead is pressed against yours. “This is why I never wanted to meet you because I know how much I want you,” You can't look anywhere but his eyes. “Because I know you’ll never let me walk away. Because you shut my mind down and make my heart do crazy, crazy shit.”

Part 5
(Part 4: here)
Jake’s pov
“I never thought you would go to a festival.” Dan speaks as he sits on the driver’s seat. I'’ve been sitting on the passengers seat for twenty minutes waiting for them to get ready. Dan is the only one who has shown up. Amelia and Lilly are still inside.
“Neither did I.” It comes out as depressed for a whole different reason. Alex Graham, I can't find anything about him. I have reached out to a few people and they just told me to wait. Only if I had my computer, I would have gotten something in an hour or two.
“What’s up with your mood swings? You don’t sound this exhausted when you are with Amelia. Are you pretending to be happy?” Never in my lifetime I imagined to be having such a conversation with Dan. But something about him has changed ever since I clarified that I am not a traitor to the country or stole money.
“I am not. That side of me naturally occurs around her. And when I am not by her side, everything else hits me.” It's hard to believe the words leaving my mouth because they never do. The only person I open up to is Amelia but I can't talk to her about this.
Dan hums. “Everthing else? You mean, the government and shit?”
I shake my head.
“Then what?”
I sigh. “If I tell you, what are the chances that you wouldn’t tell Amelia?”
He shrugs. “Like, zero.”
I fight a laugh at his honesty. “That’s what I thought.”
“So what is it?” He opens a can of beer and offer me. I shake my head. “Whatever it is, if you think you shouldn’t tell her, then you definitely should.”
I have always relied on solving problems myself. Even in the investigation to find Hannah, I relied on Amelia for all the things I couldn't do. And she relied on me for what I could do. I have no experience in solving problems that require involvement of emotions. I do not want to ask anything of her. I’d hate to be the one asking her questions. I would listen to her for eternity but I can't ask her. I don't find myself in that position.
“I can't.” I simply say since I have no idea how to explain it to Dan or how much he’d care about my issues.
“What you mean you can’t? You got a mouth. You got a cerebrum. Work it out.” I can't help but to smile at how easy he thinks it is.
“If I could simply tell her, Dan, I would have. If it was anything about me, she would be knowing it by now.” I curse internally on how much I am sharing.
“So wait,” Dan puts his beer away, sitting straight. “It’s not about you? It's about her?”
I poke my tongue against the inner membrane of my mouth turning my head towards the window. I need to relearn how to keep my mouth shut.
“Is it an ex problem?” Dan asks.
“No.” Then, I realise something. She has been living for twenty years and would have come across plenty of men. Alex Graham, the guy who messaged me, could be one of them. “I’m not sure.”
Dan leans back in his seat, nodding to himself. “That’s why you need to ask her but you are not sure if you should ask her.”
I close my eyes, taking in how correct he is.
“Well, I don't know much about the shoulds and should nots. But I know that you should stick with the should nots for tonight.”
I open my eyes. He's right. Tonight is not the occasion for having such sort of conversation nor am I prepared for it.
“Or else, if you need to beat the shit out of someone, I'll be there. First row. No questions asked. I just love the thrill of fighting.” I thought Amelia was the only one who could make me laugh but I had been wrong. Dan can be funny too. Sometimes. Rest of the times, he's just annoying.
I close my eyes and let my head fall back. After a few minutes, I whisper, “Thanks.” When he didn't say anything I was sure he didn't hear me but then—
“Anytime, man.”
We wait for a few more minutes for Amelia and Lilly in a comfortable silence. Then the door to the back seat opens, and my eyes goes to the mirror in order to see Amelia. My heart does a crazy jump when I find her already looking at me from the mirror. She smiles and I return her smile unknowingly. When I told Dan that she brings out my this side naturally, I didn't lie.
Lilly sits beside Amelia on the backseat.
Dan starts the car. “Are you idiots ready?” Amelia and Lilly answer enthusiastically with a ‘Yes’. And I do no understand why they answer when they are being addressed as idiots but I do laugh.
Lilly starts a random conversation. “I haven't painted in a while. It's like the colors inside me are screaming.”
“You paint?” Amelia asks, astonished.
I knew. I did a background on all of them.
“Lilly’s an art major.” Dan says. “And I tried my luck at a law college. One year and I dropped out.”
I knew that too.
“What about you?” Lilly asks Amelia.
“I went to Everbetten Institute of Arts. I'm a drama major.”
I... didn't know that. I had planned to run a background check on her after talking to her once. After talking to her, I didn't want to know anything about her, I wanted to explore her, little by little. Even the information I took down from Dark Web didn't have much.
My chest tightens. The name of the institute sounds awfully familiar. My hand grabs my phone and looking for the screenshots of the information I got on Alex Graham.
Passed out from Everbetten Institute of Arts.
Irritation and a pile of questions fill me. I'd do anything to have my computer right now but again I feel helpless because even my hacking skills won't be able to find answers this time.
Dan seems to have noticed my stiffness so drifts the conversation towards me and I feel like puching his face. “What about you, Jake?”
I look at him and he gives me the type of smile that says answer or else Amelia will know something is wrong.
“I got into music in my teenage. Guitar, basically.” I say and the shock in the atmosphere is visible. Dan’s mouth is a little open as he tries to make sense of what I said. Lilly stares ahead blankly. And Amelia is looking at me through mirror and I find myself unable to look at any of them. “I’m not going to play it for you—”
“You are definitely going to play.” Dan says.
“Yes, you are.” Amelia and Lilly chime in from behind.
I sigh. I should have something complicated related to computers.
The flow of conversation keeps declining to more and more unsophisticated as we reach the festival.
As we get out of the car, my eyes fall on Amelia. I could finally see her without any obstacles. And she looks...exquisite and irresistible. Everday she reminds me what I would be missing if I had walked away. Everyday I thank myself for staying. There's so much I don't know about her but I don't mind. I'll be happily on her magical mystery ride.
The light dress she's wearing with shades of purple isn't anything special but if she were to be lost in a crowd, I'd spot her in an instant.
“Hi.” She says as if we just met.
“Hey.” I play along.
All of a sudden, I feel that she's too far away. I pull her towards me with a hand on her waist. Her breath hitches slightly. I love how she reacts to my touch.
“You look good.” She steals my words.
I look at our surroundings. Lilly and Dan are already looking for something. There's a huge crowd. I look again at her eyes to find the familiar comfort. “I have no idea what we are supposed to do here.” I admit.
She shrugs. “Neither do I. Let's just find something to eat first?”
I nod, although I'm not hungry for food. I'm hungry for every second I can spend with her.
I hold her hand as we through the crowd.
“Wait a moment.” She says pulling her hand back. She bends a little to fix the strap of her scandals. Someone comes in between us and she’s no longer in front of me. I spot her a little away from me. I chase but she keeps looking here and there. She can't hear me either.
The crowd gets thicker and it gets hard to breath. I get out of the crowd. My hand immediately going to my phone.
I dial her digits and a familiar sound comes from behind me. It's her ringtone. I turn around to find her. I smile but it is short lived. There's a guy behind her. He doesn't look like he's just passing by.
“Jake.” She calls out and I look her again. She gestures to the guy. “This is my friend, Alex. We went to the same college.”
