Many volatile organic compounds are man-made chemicals used and produced during the manufacturing of paint, pharmaceuticals and refrigerants, and they could have short- and long-term adverse health effects, according to the EPA.Hazardous air pollutants are known to cause cancer and other serious health effects, such as reproductive effects and birth defects, as well as negatively impacting the environment. Hazardous air pollutants in landfill gas can include benzene, which is found in gasoline, and vinyl chloride, which is used to make PVC plastic and vinyl products, including floor coverings, children’s toys and cars."
