Pac-Man the RPG
Pathfinding in this game is really fun, and the more I work with it the more my encounter rooms seem to resemble Pac-Man, and I love it. This is sort of how I'm doing things.
Every room is made up of 10 by 9 boards. When a player walks to the edge of the screen, the camera pans over to the next board. Small rooms are only one board, but larger rooms can be made up of several. Encounter rooms are large, and encounter slimes spawn on random floor tiles when the player enters one. The slimes are meant to chase the player, but not in a way that makes them inescapable.
When a slime needs to decide where to move to, it checks if it shares a board with the player. If it does, it will continuously chase down the player until it's close enough to trigger an encounter or the player leaves the board. If it doesn't share a board with the player, it will pick a board in either the horizontal or vertical direction of the player. There is a small chance that they'll go in a different direction, so they're not completely predictable. Since you could easily walk to another board and be greeted with a charging slime two tiles in front of you, the slimes tell the game which board they're going to. If the player is on that board, a little speech bubble with a slime in it appears on the tile that the slime is pathing to so you get some warning. So, it's kind of like Pac-Man! There are fewer slimes than ghosts, and you don't DIE when you touch one, but it's made a little harder by the fact that you can't see the entire room at once.
Not dead!
Hey guys, I'm working on back end stuff and re-writing a lot of spaghetti, so I haven't had much to share visually in a while. I've implemented some cool new features, though!
The main thing I'm working on now is room generation. Everything was hand-placed before, which is terrible. I've created a new Map object that uses character strings to build rooms and fill them with objects. It does this every time you open a new door, so rooms are constantly being generated for you to wander around in. Getting the doors to connect different parts of the dungeon in organic ways is a little difficult, but it's been really fun trying to handle rooms in a more useful way.

What's your favorite RPG?
Final Fantasy IX. Freya Crescent is one of my favorite vidya characters. I guess she’s a bit on the 2edgy side, but I’ve always loved her character design a lot, and dragoons are one of my favorite Square classes.
Edit: Also, IX has one of my most nostalgic and loved OSTs. Kuja’s trance theme (The Dark Messenger), tho. Damn that song is biblical.
Edit 2: Tetra Master.
I really like SRPGs a lot as well, and my fav would be Fire Emblem: Fūin no Tsurugi. Pretty big FE fan.
