Dune, with the Ixians and Tleilaxu on #tabletopsimulator. The two new factions are cool! They are a little rulsier, are less intuitive (especially Ix) because the source material is thinner. If you’ve pressed on to Dune Messiah, that’s the source for some of the depiction of the Tleilaxu in the game. But both are quite flavorful and fit pretty cleanly into the game. We used both in a 6-player game to try them out (replacing the Guild and Bene Gesserit), and I think I’d recommend using just one your first time out. With 5, replace the BG with the Tleilaxu and don’t use the Guild; with 6, replace the Guild with the Ixians. Another thing I really like about the new factions is that they introduce potentially two more Strongholds: the Ixian mobile stronghold and the tech tokens. With at least 6 strongholds available, the 6-player game becomes a lot more open under the standard rules because a 2-player alliance can reasonably hope to grab 4 strongholds (which is why I think you should make sure Ix is in with 6). The Bene Tleilaxu are definitely an analog to the Bene Gesserit: they start weak and have only limited income, so it takes time to build up and they have to make sure to keep the pot boiling for 4 turns or so - they are not going to be doing a lot for a while. The Ixians are another brute force faction, but they have a money problems (mitigated somewhat by their ability to cycle treachery cards in their hand). The Ixian alliance benefit is super strong too, it seems like. Anyway, quite enjoyed. And TTS is not a bad platform - there was some friction initially as we got used to it, but it went reasonably smoothly after that. There aren’t a ton of handling costs, so it’s just the spice that’s a pain. It’s a long-ish game so it’s not something I’d play online very often, and even more so than many boardgames it loses something online, but it is a great game so it’s good to know it’s an option. Playing the Guild in 6p Dune. The Guild is the one faction I’m actually a little lukewarm; they get a huge wad of cash, but their terrible leaders and passive powers just aren’t my favorite. So, I’ve been experimenting a bit with the configuration on this. 5p standard rules works great and playes in 3-4 hours. But 6p can be a slog, going 5-6 hours, and it’s tough to win. I thought the hybrid rules (alliances limited to 2, but you need only 3 strongholds to win) might be the way to go. But having now tried this twice, I’m not sure; for two allies to hold 3 strongholds just isn’t that difficult and so you’ve got to be super-aggressive even on defense and the whole game can turn on a couple card draws or one traitor. It works reasonably well, and the games are short (a couple hours), but I think it’s not all that Dune can be. Probably with 6 ideally you‘d play the standard rules (alliances need an extra stronghold to win) and realize it’s a 6 hour game, but if you want to play Dune and want something easy to finish the hybrid rules work well enough it seems. The 5p games we’ve played have actually been more satisfying than the games with 6 though - it’s just better pacing and a better balance of offense and defense and a more comfortable length. The physical design of the new edition isn’t great sadly; the initial newness has faded to a kind of “meh”. But regardless, still a satisfying classic after all these years. And expansions are coming this year(ish), which has the potential to add some fun. Finally got to play Dune! This has been a big game on my must play and even missed two game nights with it being played. Which was sad but finally got to play it. Man this game is awesome! It is epic and tense with super cool game breaking asymmetric powers. I cannot wait to play it again. Quick note would be it is a game that requires a time investment. It takes a relatively long time to play and really requires one complete play to truly learn how to play. Finally playing Gale Force 9’s new edition of Dune! It’s not as nice as the old Avalon Hill version - colors are a little murky, the cards are text-heavy, the illustrations are a bit spare - but it’s great to have this in print again in a reasonably nice edition that isn’t that expensive. Couple things on the rules: for 4-5 players I’d go with the standard rules (2-way alliances which need 4 strongholds to win); for 6 I think I’d use the hybrid rules: alliances are limited to 2-way but only need 3 strongholds. Also, there is confusion about when spice can be transferred between allies (the rules are unclear). I’d use the rule that you can use your spice to cover any of your allies’ costs (bidding, revival, shipping, combat support), but can’t give outright gifts. This is a little finicky (I prefer just allowing unlimited transfers, as in the original) but this clips a couple oddities. As I think I’ve mentioned in previous comments, this is a really fun game and it’s been great that it’s getting table time again.
