LISTEN i very very nearly cliffhangered that. i wrote up to sokka leaving work early and i had to go to sleep or i was going to die and i was like. what if i just posted this. what if i ended it here. then i slept on it and decided that was too evil even for me so i wrote a little under 3k words last night to finish it

this one is 4 chapters of just. so much softness. so much hurt/comfort. good highland cows. so much dealing with what they’ve been thru and figuring out how to be together but oh goddd its so soft.

okay a crash course in mesmerism; a dude called dr franz mesmer from austria in the early 1770s struck pretty close to something a little like hypnosis, but then decided that it was about “animal magnetism” and “Lebensmagnetismus” which is the invisible magnetic force in living things, and using this Force could heal people (also where we get the word “mesmerised” from ! )

basically, king louis XVI was skeptical of all this and wanted to prove to his wife and courtiers that it was a load of crap, so he commissioned the french academy of sciences to investigate it. this research team included the mayor of paris, antoine lavoisier, dr joseph guillotin, aaannnd benjamin franklin !

franklin and his crew put a fair amount of effort in to debunking it with various experiments - at his home due to poor health - with a mesmerism practitioner (or magnetiser if you must) sent by mesmer, charles deslon. the MOST hilarious of these had the mr deslon ““mesmerise”” a specific tree in franklin’s gardens, and have a twelve year old boy go out to find said special tree by hugging them and feeling the Force, with a blindfold on.

the experiment ended when said boy passed out
