Disclaimer: Dark Ages spoiler ahead!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I keep thinking about the scene of Doomguy rescuing (at least, attempting to rescue) Thira, and how carefully he handled her. I won't get into it all over again, but... gentle giant. This ~7' Hell-hardened marine who rips demons apart with his bare hands took the time to assess the risks associated with touching and moving an unconscious woman, and acted accordingly. In fact, he was so focused on doing it right, that when the Wraith spirit reached out and zapped him, he was stunned. I actually think it startled him, a little, outside of the obvious pain it inflicted.
He was convinced that she wouldn't react, so much so that he not only acted as slowly and as carefully as he possibly could, but he also damn near jumped out of his skin when she did react, even if involuntarily.
Doomguy is what you see in the Dictionary beneath the term "unstoppable force." And yet, sometimes, he stops. Even after all he's been through. The threat of Hell was practically knocking on the door, and yet he still slowed down and took his time. He's not irrational, nor impulsive, nor blinded by rage. He just knows what's right.
I'll probably have more to yap about when I go back and rewatch all the cutscenes, because good god, Doomguy emotes so much more noticeably than he ever has. It's almost as if, in previous games, his reactions/responses to in-game events were either done for comedy, or "Doomguy being a badass" moments. Here? Oh, baby, it's all for the lore!! I'm gonna dissect his character until he's completely unrecognizable. Fun!
