Summary
Persephone Samuels: 200-300 word explanation of emotions, references and inspirations
For the DSDN112 project #3 the brief indicated that the students should create an 8 page comic and then using HTML, CSS and JQuery create a web based interactive comic. The idea is to take an older form of media (comics) and adapt them for the newer web based technologies. For this assignment I looked into creating a children’s cartoon for multiple reasons. One, I had drawn in the Manga style in the past and wished to explore and challenge myself by looking into the chibi branch of manga drawing. Two, children’s stories are useful for making simple and clear plotlines exploring human nature and simple moral themes. And three, children’s stories often use clear and strong emotions to convey ideas. I tried to cover a range of emotions such and fear, fright, happiness, and hunger etc and used the chibi style to abstract and exaggerate features. I tried to show changing of emotion frequently and furthermore tried to show a progression of emotions intensity when Sam is stuck in the tree from him being scared to full blown crying. With the Handmade comic I chose to use no speech so the emotions were the pure intention of the comic. I used simple and clear backgrounds that don’t distract from the emotions. When I adapted the comic for web format I kept the drawing style and abstracted cartoon look of the images and backgrounds. However to make the story interactive I turned into more of a game to save Sam and removed the second character entirely so the user is actively engaged in the narrative. I tried to keep all key emotion in the web comic while engaging the user actively in the emotions.
For technical help and key terms I looked into their sites (However I did not directly copy code from any site): http://www.lynda.com/member.aspx http://www.codecademy.com/dashboard http://www.w3schools.com/default.asp http://stackoverflow.com/ For inspiration I goggled keywords about what I wanted to draw and then created my objects off collaborations of what I saw: -chibi -male chibi -how to draw chibi -cartoon tree -cartoon barn -cartoon field -cartoon cloud
*Please note
The output is exactly the same, but I've had to slightly adjust the left and right padding of my web comic due to the uni's computer screens being bigger than my laptop screen. To tutors: please open my Web Comic html in Firefox.
