I'm blurring the name and that's the nicest I'm gonna be about this asshole because I already replied to them as politely and constructively as possible, but I actually need to address this with you guys.

This is a comment I got on my fic The Protector. There's a mild spoiler warning here as we're discussing the events of the climax and its aftermath, but the fic is designed like a tragedy so I wouldn't worry that much about it. It also has mild spoilers for my coolest fic Birds of a Feather so be aware if you were planning on making the correct decision of reading it.

As a fun fact, I have written a lot of Haikyuu fics before writing DC fic, especially Birds of a Feather (Flock Together) which is my magnus opum. Between Birds of a Feather and The Protector, that makes it a total of 212.448 words in which

THE RELATIVE MORALITY OF MURDER IS NOT THE FUCKING POINT.

Birds of a Feather is about the many different ways in which adults can fail and hurt children and about children trying to get through it and love eachother on the cusp of adulthood and about how in their attempt to survive their trauma on their own they can retraumatize themselves, about how the violence doesn't end after the abuse itself is over and about how hope and healing is possible even after everything. It's 151 988 words of talking about that and it breaches some very serious topics in depth. It took me over a year of writing one chapter per fucking week to tell this story in a way that felt right for what I wanted to say. The Protector is shorter, but it still took me a lot of time and effort to write and I wanted to be careful since it breeches a very heavy topic as well. The point of The Protector is the secondary trauma associated with the taboo around sexual abuse and how it constitutes an aggravating factor that leads to victims retraumatizing themselves and how that taboo can completely annihilate families and lives. The last chapter is about hope that healing and rebuilding yourself around that trauma is possible. The Protector is 60 460 words of that. THE PROTECTOR IS ABOUT THE VIOLENCE OF THE TABOO AROUND CHILDHOOD SEXUAL ABUSE. In both fics, both murder and suicide are presented as permanent solutions that desperate characters try to turn to because they see no other option in one specific context, and those situations are disastrous because of the context that makes those specific decisions deeply traumatic because retraumatization is what the story is about. Not fucking morality. Note that The Protector literally starts with Jason killing the joker and black mask and nobody gives a flying fuck about them because good fucking riddance. The only one who cares about the morality is Cass for like one paragraph in the epilogue, which seems to be what that person was commenting about, but the thing is that that debate is left unanswered, the characters are still disagreeing, because the point of the scene is to highlight and emphasize the fact that IT'S NOT THE FUCKING POINT.

The reason I'm telling you guys all that is because I need you to understand what it feels like to put so much time and effort on topics that are so sensitive and important to you, only for some motherfucker to barge in and try to teach me a lesson about canon characterization. I understand that some of you guys have learnt reading through a really weird method and I'm sorry your education system failed you but there's a need for self-awareness here, if you don't know how to read then you have to fix that before trying to teach people lessons in writing and media analysis.

This is a comment from someone who is so engrossed in JT discourse that they are unable to engage with the fic from any perspective from that one, which is wild because it ends up having them try to teach me a lesson on a point WE BOTH AGREE ON. I agree that it's fucking annoying when stories try to teach Jason or Helena or anyone a lesson about why killing is wrong but that's not the point and that's never been the point! I am on the record here on tumblr for having apparently pretty controversial opinions about how much I don't care for the idea that murder is inherently evil. 212.448. I need you to understand how much time and effort of my fucking life that is. All of which I am *choosing* to share with you guys on the basis that I am trusting you people to at least read the fucking story before getting angry about it.
