Sir Roscoe Q&A
Where does the name Sir Roscoe come from and what does it represent?
Roscoe: So, My DJ name came from just a straight nickname. I played baseball all of my life and I got the nickname Roscoe. So Roscoe has been a thing and I just kept it going. Roscoe is like the kid in me, but Sir Roscoe, I got from when I was trying to take my DJ’ing serious. I needed to make the name a bit catchier.
What drew you to electronic music?
The beats. The way how it made people feel without having words. I come from a hip hop background. When the beat matches, the beats have to match the words or you're just not feeling it. So to hear music without words and just beats, how it made people feel. The way that the beats allowed people to escape.
What was your first electronic music record you heard?
Shit, one of the homies, actually showed me a Plastikman album, Sheet 1. they showed me Sheet 1. Funny thing is, that album came out when I was born.
It was his previous moniker right?
Yeah. That was his previous moniker. So I just knew Plastikman and Sheet 1.
What do you think about Richie Hawtin today?
He’s a genius. He’s definitely changing the whole game of techno, in a whole business aspect ya know? Its almost turned into a lifestyle. That kinda also influenced my Street Soundz campaign. Change the game. This music is meant to be experimental, so experiment.
Which artists would you say that you draw the most inspiration from? Collectively? individually?
Thats a hard question, because I’m like influenced by a lot! Even my own peers that are around me. Definitely the homies. Not too many like.. I mean besides Richie. Besides a lot of the old school techno cats that I look up to, I get a lot of inspiration from the shit I am around and watching them grind hard.
Individuality is definitely a big thing for me. So much shit sounds the same. It just kinda sucks to see people grinding their ass off and see people who don’t really do shit getting all the buzz.
As long as you're doing you and you are having fun doing you, you're winning! Because, you are unique yourself.
What is the uniqueness that you express in your music?
The balance that I have between house and techno. I like the fusion. Like, and if you know how to mix your tracks, select your tracks wisely, you can definitely tend to the house crowd, you can tend to the techno crowd. Its just really stupid to me; All I wish is that, is basically, expand your mind. Like, if you've seen Carl Cox a million fucking times, everyone knows he’s great, but go see somebody else.
You want people to get out of their box?
Yeah, get out of their comfort zone and expand. Go check some other shit out!
