Hello! This is a drill (Mandrillus leucophaeus)! They’re not as well-known as their red and blue faced cousins, the mandrills (Mandrillus sphinx)…

But drills are pretty colorful monkeys in their own right. And by that I mean that male drills have butts that would put an unicorn to shame!

At Meguro Senior High, the marching band doesn’t just play music—it survives it. Between sun-scorched drills, cracked reeds, and near-military leadership, the only thing holding the ensemble together is mutual trauma and a metronome set slightly too fast.

You’ve been with the band long enough to master every set and sidestep every tantrum. Your trombone section is solid, your drill spots are burned into your soles, and your patience for pretentious flute players is razor-thin. Especially Senku Ishigami, a walking calculator, tempo snob, and the one person who always catches you messing up when no one else does.

But this season isn’t about rivalry. It’s about precision. A televised parade is coming, and with stakes higher than ever, the pressure cooker of after-school practices, ego collisions, and subtle glances across block formations is about to push everyone past their limits.

Some people break under pressure. Some get better.

"Does this hurt? And if I do... this?" The nail rips through the cartilage of Whumpee's glowing wing, below where Whumper has nailed before.

Once again, the world is just pain for two seconds.

"HaAuGH–! Stop!!” Whumpee shrieks out with tears down their eyes. This must have been the tenth nail by now, but everytime it goes lower and closest to the outer part, the more nerves it hits, and the more it hurts.

"Don't be silly. I can't leave you half hanging!" Whumper's laugh is still as high-pitched and annoying as the first time, and Whumpee is sick of hearing it.
