In 2020, both houses in the U.S. Congress passed a bill to ban the use of driftnets in federal waters, but President Trump vetoed it. The bill has now been reintroduced by Senators Feinstein and @sencapito and is being considered again. Join more than 135,000 supporters in urging the U.S. Congress to swiftly advance this legislation and ban the deadly use of driftnets. This video shows us the damage to marine life caused by the use of driftnets. Some of the images are disturbing. Sharks, sunfish, dolphins and other fish and seals and sea gulls aren’t cuddly mammals that engage our sense of outrage, but they suffer too, particularly when their deaths are not intended. They are by-catch, a necessary consequence, I guess you can call it, of using driftnets. Description of the video from the producer, Mercy for Animals:
A disturbing undercover investigation by Mercy For Animals exposes blatant animal cruelty and widespread destruction of marine life by the commercial fishing industry, including sharks viciously stabbed and bludgeoned over the head with a baseball bat and protected species, such as dolphins, sea lions, and seabirds, killed in cruel driftnets.
The use of driftnets are banned off the U.S. East Coast and off the coasts of Oregon and Washington, by the United Nations, and by countries around the world. Ironically, their use is permitted off the coast of California. However, the California Senate and General Assembly just passed a bill phasing out their use with a total ban by 2023. Governor Brown hasn’t signed it it. Here’s the link to an article in EcoWatch telling us about this California legislation.
Driftnets are horrible. I’m staying away from swordfish from now on (except for high-fives). 🐢🐬🐋
We do terrible things.

Fisheries: European Commission proposes full ban on driftnets
The European Commission wants to prohibit the use of any kind of driftnets for fishing in all EU waters as of 1 January 2015.
Although rules are already in place to forbid using driftnets to catch certain migratory fishes, the practice continues to be a cause of concern due to the incidental catching of marine mammals, sea turtles and sea birds which are mostly protected under EU legislation. To…
