He pursed his lips, less pleased with the wording than was strictly necessary, mostly because he'd been what he thought was fairly active in actually trying to do good rather than just make everything less bad. "That's a very pessimistic view," he noted, though there was no offense or hostility in the tone, at least.
He couldn't afford that sort of pessimism, not if he actually wanted to get anything done. Because the moment he began to think of his work as simply, not the worst, the moment his efforts became minimal, he knew.
"I think it's possible," he countered this time, looking to her and watching the construction of the pipes. "That sometimes we do actual good. Make something better in such a way that it's more than just not bad." He gestured to the instrument. "Like your work there, for instance. Something beautiful. Something better. That can happen with people, too."
