I read the faq and the size of the gem in Steven... That's horrifying ':c I'm surprised he didn't learn how big it was due to the hospital visits. Lol. Anyways, I just binged the whole comic before going to work today. Can't wait to see more! :D
Well, the thing is, diamonds don’t show up on x-rays.
So if you can imagine this - doctors who are looking at this foster kid with various breathing/speech problems are likely not looking for anything wild here. They take an x-ray, and the only thing they CAN see is Steven’s skull.
Now, yeah, it’s a skull shaped vaguely like a giant rock inside his head...
But there obviously WOULDN’T be a giant rock inside his head, yeah? That would be... really weird? Medically doesn’t make sense? Especially since, aside from not being able to breathe easily, and not speaking as early as preferable, Steven hit his developmental milestones as a baby/toddler. So clearly it’s not like there’s anything wrong with his brain. No reason to do a CT scan.
So they basically are like “Yep, we see the problem - your skull bones are just Really Fucked Up.” That’s the diagnosis. “You’ve got Really Weird Headbones” but also you’re like, a 5 year old kid who seems otherwise unbothered by this, so why would we put you through any extensive testing? That would be stressful and expensive, and no one really wants that, so we will just say “it’s weird but he’s clearly not suffering TOO much and it’s getting better as he’s getting older, so it’s probably not super serious.”
For those wondering: “But uhh what about the part that’s sticking out? What do they think THAT is?”
Well, they think that is... a bone. A part of his skull that’s growing out of his head. It’s Weird. And crystal-like. But again, it’s not hurting him so like. It’s Probably Okay.
