I remember he used to be a castle guard? But now is retired, but does he ever lends an extra hand if needed/gets called for extra help with guarda stuff by the castle?

That's right, Saul used to be a guard when he was younger :)

He was mostly a part of the "decorative service" (at least, that's what he called it). His job was mostly to stand at the occasional doorway here and there and look pretty--or intimidating, depending on who you ask. He mostly stuck around the royal gardens.

He's since become jaded and cynical about the ordeal, doesn't like to talk about his past, working as a guardsman. Once or twice he's mentioned being a part of some war somewhere, but that's another story...

These days he doesn't step foot on castle grounds. Instead he sticks around his bar and teaches Mario the ins-and-outs of being a hero fit for the Mushroom Kingdom. He teaches like he's done it 200 times before and he's done and over with the whole thing.
