Though I enjoy a long fic or post, sometimes it can really clutter up my dash. Scrolling endlessly to try and pass one post isn’t particularly fun, and you can lose some of your audience’s attention. Some fans may even unfollow accounts that interrupt their feed with overly long posts. The “Keep reading” feature is also a great way to warn and censor mature or triggering content. and can be used to ensure consent is given before viewers see or read NSFW content. Overall, utilizing the “Keep reading” feature can make your post more enjoyable and shareable.

When Should I Use “Keep Reading?”

There’s no hard and fast rule here, but I personally think it’s better to leave your readers wanting more than overloading them. I recommend using “Keep reading” if your post is more than 1,000 words on desktop or more than 3-4 swipes on mobile. You can always use it to hide NSFW, mature, content from unsuspecting or possibly underage viewers.

How Do I Use “Keep Reading?”

On desktop, hit enter and then click the three dots or “meatball”. On mobile, type :readmore: and then click return. But since not everyone learns the same, click “Keep reading” to find more specific instructions with screenshots below the cut!

I love reccing fics and spreading love to the authors whose work I have enjoyed. I always want to credit and tag the authors on tumblr so readers can follow them directly if they want and get updates on their work. Sometimes I can’t find you, so it helps me if you put your tumblr link on AO3. 

Where Should I Put My Tumblr Link?

I look both in the beginning and end notes, especially in the first and last chapters. Putting it in the end notes of the last chapter is a really good way to get readers who enjoyed your story to click and follow your tumblr.

So, for example, if I want to link to The Drarry Librarian, I would copy/paste the above part into the notes section on AO3:

Then I’d change the link part by copy/pasting into the actual link into the part that says INSERT YOUR HTTP LINK HERE:
