Vanessa had been in the bar for business, at first, and then because she couldn’t bear to tear herself away from the free drinks that she kept getting handed. These silly, petty men insisted on tripping over themselves and each other to get to her, to try and impress her. Of course, there was a part of her that detested them for this annoying behaviour, but another part that was more than happy to sit there and laugh at them. They thought she laughed because they were funny, when really it was because they were stupid.

After a while, she noticed the man watching the scene unfold, as he quietly sipped his drink, biding his time apparently. It didn’t take too long after the steady flow of idiots died down before he spoke. He didn’t seem as stupid as they all did -- he was even a little interesting.

          ❝ Ah, well, I suppose I do. Only when the opportunity arises.               What was it you enjoyed most? Seeing men have their asses               handed to them without me lifting a finger, or seeing them               practically throw their money over the bar to try and buy me               with drinks? Either way, I had fun. ❞

She smiled at him, and raised her glass as well. Miss Ives had several drinks lined up on the bar that she’d been given, and noticing that the man was drinking a Manhattan, she slid over the most similar one she had to that, which was an Old Fashioned.
