Three questions concerning dubbing: 1) What is Kevin's insult in the Dutch version of EEnE? 2) Was the Kanker's name changed because of its not so pleasant meaning? 3) Are there any movies or series you prefer in the English original?
1. Kevin used to say “muts“, but in season 5 it was changed into “dwaas“. “Muts“ -when taken literally- is a soft hat, but is also a swear that mainly targets women. You use it when someone’s being dumb or playfully silly, though I vividly remember it being a lesbian slur in the 90s. Unless that was only the case in my neighbourhood.“Dwaas“ means “fool“, and I hate it. The English word sounds fine, but ours is too inoffensive. Children and cool people definitely don’t have this word in their vocabulary, so to hear a bully jock utter it sounds out of place.Really don’t get it, they should’ve gone for “sukkel“, it’s a balanced insult.2. I’ve talked about this before; “kanker“ means “cancer“ in our language, but is also considered to be the rudest, most despised swear word out there. It works in combination with other words as well, so if we allowed these girls to be called the “Kanker zusjes“, you’d basically be calling them “fucking bitch sisters“.Our dub changed it into “Drammer“, seemingly referring to the word “drammen“, which more or less means to have a temper tantrum and/or not shutting up and pushing your own will onto people.3. I like Mulan, Dexter’s Laboratory and Courage the Cowardly Dog better in English.
